For grins I did a quick search on local CL and eBay because all this talk had me intrigued. I did find a pretty solid example in Texas for around $8k. I saw one that was a rusted out mess and the crack smoker wanted $3,500

That seems to be a reasonable price now a days for a good condition driver quality car. I'm hoping to get mine in that condition for less $$$, I have other mouths to feed aka cars.For grins I did a quick search on local CL and eBay because all this talk had me intrigued. That last one isnt bad, but about what they are going for by me when found. What it really comes down to for me is dollars, while the fact that it would be all Pontiac is cool I can build a SBC with more power for less. So before sliding down that slippery slope of swaps I thought I should just get a bump stick for the 403 and be happy. This car wont see a drag strip, its just another cruiser.
On a side note, I didnt know how popular FB marketplace was. They've really expanded since I stopped using it.
Thats an offer if I've ever heard one lol. BTW I got titles for a couple of Jon Boats and a boat trailer from Vermont then transferred them over to PA. Easy peasy.

I like the sleek look of the Forumulas. I've love to get my hands on a 70-73 Formula, or even a regular. Thats a bucket list car for sure. Dont care what it has as long as its not rust.
Thanks man, I appreciate it. You can definitely make some power with the olds, just gonna require some extra work. Thankfully they are pretty torquey motors and some gears and maybe a stall converter will help it feel much better.
Back on to the build thread...
This weekend I plan on building some 2x4 cribbing to elevate the car a bit since the cherry picker doesnt fit under the control arms. I should have the motor out this weekend.

really? I never had a problem gettign the cherry picker under the cars I had.. is this one lowered or something?

As far as I know its stock height. Its on dirt and may have sunk a bit, tires are also 25 years old and low. Dont wanna pump em up too much. The top of the leg of the cherry picker is about 1/2 to high. Regardless, I want the cribbing for other jobs so I figure now is a good a time as any to make em up.

I've had it happen to on some things I pulled engines from. I've got a duralast picker and it's wide front to rear same width not narrow in back and wide in front like some but I've hit control arms too in the yard in dirt on good tires.
Must be a combo of dirt or lower height sidewalls or something.

So this past weekend I ended not having enough time to do everything I wanted but made some progress on the TA and Burb nonetheless. I went to home depot and picked up 14 2x4x8 studs. I didnt want to spend the money on ground contact pressure treated wood cuz I'm cheap. I will probably end up cutting some sort of pressure treated base for it from the scraps I have in my basement.
I only jacked up the front because the rear was super sketchy, luckily I'll have enough room to what I need to do as it sits now. That cribbing is super sturdy. Highly suggested for dirt monkeys like myself.
Mental note...install trans cooler lines with engine and trans out!
Next weekend I have to install the condenser in my Jetta so we'll see how much I get done. Plus its the Mrs. birthday weekend so we have a few things planned.

you got the core support out? If not I see your next problem before hand, picker not raising high wenough to get it out that high up.
I also highly suggest you at least put down a sheet or wood or something for them cribs to sit on.
If you're not going to be under the car then not such a big deal.
I've used about anything from a big sheet of steel that was thin like less then 1/8 or so, to using those 1 inch thick concrete step stone home depot or lowes has to keep things from sinking into the ground. My favorite that I use in my garage is big belts from the mines, not the easiest to find but they are like 3 feet wide and various lengths since they were a belt and complete circle at one point now cut up. They are 1/2 thick and have steel reinforcement. They use em here to run coal out of the mines to the trucks or plants or whatever, like any other factory does with moving things or like you see on gold rush.
Might not be able to get those in your area though. I got all mine free got lucky.

Core support is out. Still got everything attached to it too lol.
Yea after the rain we got I'm definitley going to put some plywood under the cribbing to distribute the load. I dont plan on getting under the car until the engine and trans are mated so I can connect linkages and the driveshaft.
The slate mines by me are all but dead but that belt material sounds pretty interesting. What stone are you talking about from depot? I've used 2 inch thick pavers in the past but I dont like putting too much weight on them for fear of cracking.

I know what you mean and yea mine are thinner they would crack easy.
I've seen guys take 2 concrte blocks, liquid nail them together, and then use like 3/4 plywood or so on the top and bottom of them and use em in the dirt, or even fill them with quikrete.
The ones I had are just like sidewalk stones about 16 inches by 16 inches or so and like an inch thick.
I'll see if I can find any decent pics of those belts in my floor.
