89-91 Lighting

best lights to run for the 89-91 front ends?? So far from what i have seen LMC is the only company that make aftermarket lens for the high/low beams? anyone know a secret that i don’t?

Are you talking about the halogen sealed beams? They are everywhere, try any auto parts store. For example - as suggested above - at O'reilly's for about $15 each:

Low beam: Sylvania H4703

High beam: Sylvania H4701

Lots of companies make H4703 and H4701 sealed beam conversions. No namers on ebay / amazon, LMC, Hella, Euro Lamps. I used Euro Lamps (eurolamps.com) conversion on my Trans Am for over 10 years and it just recently cracked from a rock. Those use H7 for low beam and H1 for high beam. I currently run Hellas in my Burb and they both are H4 bulbs.

First pic is with the LMC conversion which uses 9006 (or 9012 as an upgrade) for low and I believe 9005 for high. Second pic is the only pic I have with the hellas. Hellas have a frosted glass pattern like stock wagners so I went with that over the clear LMC look. Euro lamps also have a frosted pattern.




LMC are real sharp when using a halogen bulb, not good at all with an HID. Hella are also great with a halogen and better than the LMC when using HID but still scatter light. Eurolamps are the worst out of the 3 but still way better than stock sealed beam.

Make sure you use a relay for whatever headlight upgrade you do.

First modification I did to my truck. Went with the LMC conversion, gutted them, turned them into proper projector housings and went with a quality set of HID.

The other thing I did was change the wiring. Once upon a time, Iwas a teenager, and my first car was an '87 Superior Sovereign Landaulet on the RWD Cadillac chassis (which I kept forever, serving as my daily vehicle until I was 30 and bought this truck to use as a daily). Those Cadillacs had four headlamps up front as well. But unlike my '89 Suburban, they were wired in a better, smarter way. The outer pair of lamps acted as HI/LO, having a regular setting and a brighter HI setting, so switching on the HI beams would make those get brighter, while also turning the inside set of lights on. The most logical way to operate a system of quad headlamps. Same setup on my '67 GTO, '67 Chevelle, '72 Lincoln, '73 Oldsmobile etc.

Now, as a kid, I presumed all quad headlamps setups worked that way, but that's not the case. As such, I've wired every car I've ever owned that didn't, so it does. My '89 Suburban is no exception. LO has the outside set on, switching to HI makes them brighter and also switches on the inside set.

The '87 and earlier trucks with the stacked quad lamp system, operates in the way you described the caddy working. I would hazard a guess as to the government having changed the rules for how they should operate sometime around '88 or so.
