I have been building Transmissions as a hobby for a few years now just going off books I read, threads on the internet and asking professionals. Always love to see other peoples custom builds and hear what they do to them.

This is out of my friends mud racing truck, I got it with a broken bell housing and he claimed it was burnt up. It was actually his cheap ebay converter that let go but we rebuilt it anyways.

We cut the bell housing off with a pnumatic cut off wheel and fine tuned it with a flapper wheel on a grinder all on the trunk of a ford Galaxie in my driveway. I upgraded the direct drum to a 4l80 Drum so we could use the 34 element sprag. For clutches I used Red alto with koleen steels. We also installed the Transgo 1&2 kit and set it all to competition specs.

First trip through the mud he actually shaved a full second off his normal time just because it was shifting so fast. We did all this in my garage for about 400 bucks not counting the Ultrabell he paid 500 bucks for.

This one came out of another friends K5 Blazer, he had someone try to install a shift kit and they used white lithium grease to hold the check balls in. The grease didn't melt and it burned up. I didnt do to many upgrades to this one since it was not against a ton of power. This is the last 700r4 I used "the beast" sunshell in. I thought they were a good part and always used them until I started seeing pictures of splines stripped off and complaints of vibrations. My last 700r4 had a completely shattered inner race so I decided to try the Sonax smart shell and I was sold immediately. The sunshell was very well made and even came with a special inner race machined to use a torrington bearing. That one was rebuilt a couple years ago now and I challenged him to grenade it again but he cant.

This is a TH400 I got cheap from my friend who was parting out a K30 fire truck. It was nearly perfect inside but I rebuilt it exactly like the one in my buddies mud racing truck. I was gonna flip it for cash but instead decided to help out a local high school kid needing a th400. The kid pulled the 400 out of my SS, I swapped his output shaft into it and he was back on the road. I took my output shaft and swapped it into this one I was selling and topped it off with a Hughes 2500 stall converter and TCI outlaw shifter.

It shifted so hard it was breaking the tires loose, the truck was dangerous to drive with its tire situation so I went to some 295/60R15 mickey Thompson drag radials.

I had to make my own shifter pedestal for the outlaw shifter but it was cake. Im not a fabricator by any means, I had to borrow the chop saw and welder, it turned out really nice after. I love love love the shifter, after getting used to it, the outlaw shifter beats the **** out of column shift.

The "Ireland built to the hilt one race special" sticker exists from a facebook argument with a local ******* who runs his mouth. I took his quote and had some stickers made and tagged him when I installed this transmission in my truck. They got stuck on plenty of other **** as well.

So is the Sonex shell the Holy Grail of a strong 700?

I think its a worth while part to include in a unit that will get beat on.

This particular one for the Camaro had exploded the inner race that goes into the center support. It was literally in 3 pieces and sheared off the splines on the planetary. The transmission was built by a reputable shop in Phoenix, cant remember the name but I was surprised everything was stock inside. I posted pictures of all the blown up **** in a facebook group with a bunch of professional rebuilders and they all said he was doing neutral drops to it but he claims he was just whipping some donuts.

The smart shell came with a new inner race that was polished like a mirror, half of it was machined for a torrington bearing instead of the plastic washer with 4 tangs. I also installed a aftermarket 5 pinion planetary set. Its been a couple years and so far its holding together well.
