Which crate motor to use

I am seeing lots of differs manufacturers who seem to be making and engine with the same part number. It’s a 300 hp 350 torque engine, part number Hp99c. It seems to be available under different names though lots of different sources, from summit, jegs, to the local auto parts store. Has anyone bought this engine? Looks like an easy install but needs an electric fuel pump and will only use 91 octane gas. That’s somewhat of a drawback I think.that engine comes with a 3 year warranty too I believe.

I think I would be fine buying the GM Perf crate motor for much less and selecting my exterior bolt on parts, but that is also because the first thing I'd be doing is changing the cam and using an Edelbrock performer, as well as swapping the timing chain to a double roller if they did not include one (pretty sure they don't). I'm not a big fan of Holley carbs on 4x4 trucks (which is the case for mine).

Local Chevy dealer. They were nice enough to drop it off at the shop I had do the install and pick up the core when done.

Hey Craig I am curious what the specs were on that and what your cost was overall. Color me curious. I always like to keep some frame of reference floating around. I was doing an LS swap on my K5 and am now doing an LS swap on my 64 C10, so that kinda leaves a big gaping hole in the K5 engine bay, lol. I'm not opposed to brute torque, but also not opposed to finding another LS setup. I just like to compare apples and oranges. Thanks!

It was the basic 454 truck engine: low compression, peanut port heads, etc. At the time, I lived in California and had to do smog every 2 years. Engine was $3500 in 2018 from GM 3yr/100k warranty. It was about $1800 labor for the shop to install it. I'd had back surgery so I could do it myself.

GM specs - Carb vs TBI
LE8 - 7.9 to 1 compression
230 HP @ 3800 RPM, 360 TQ @ 2800 RPM

L19 - Unknown compression – TBI engine
230 HP @ 3600 RPM, 385 TQ @ 1600 RPM

See when I see those numbers it just forces me to look at junkyard LS 6.0's, lol... 500 dollar motor with all the bones if you shop at the right salvage yard. It's hard to walk away from that, and I can tune my own stuff and fabricate my own motor mounts now days, lol... Hope your back is still holding together. I suffer with mine but trying to get all my projects done sooner so I can relax later!!!
