It sucks to say but there is no way to prevent theft on the older trucks. It's just a risk unfortunately.

Like what does the new trucks have that can't be added to the old trucks?

RFID security keys tightly integrated with the PCM.
They don't work with the original squarebody drivetrain.
You folks doing the LS swaps should consider not defeating that particular feature. Yes installing the late model steering column and keeping the security wiring is probably a PITA but the critters will need a tow truck because they will not be driving your truck away.

Well...

In Arizona (an open carry state)....if you feel that your life is in danger, you can shoot in self defense. If you witness a violent crime such as a carjacking...you also have the legal right to shoot on behalf of the victim. Just be sure to shoot them in the front and unload the clip.

Please be very careful with that advice. I know there was a time that was the advice given but it can get you into a world of trouble. Most of your top current trainers will tell you to shoot until the assailant stops being in a threat. There are many handguns with 15+ round capacity and if you empty your magazine you could end up in trouble for a variety of reasons:

1) You likely will NOT hit your target 100% of the time. You are responsible for EVERY round you fire. Stray rounds can easily lead to collateral damage.

2) If you make multiple hits that could be fatal you can be charged. I don't remember what they call it but it is similar to an Officer being charged with excessive force.

Please keep in mind that a firearm is a deadly weapon and should only be used if you are In fear of your life. You then shoot to stop the threat and to more. That doesn't mean you fire a warning shot. If you do that, they will argue you were not in mortal danger. You do not shoot to wound, that is Hollywood BS. Do not try for a head shot as that will be looked upon as you were shooting to kill. They teach now that you should aim for a triangle defined by the nipples and throat. Yes, this is likely to end up as a kill shot, but it is also regarded as the most likely shot placement to stop the threat. If the other person stops shooting or drops his weapon, you stop shooting. If he holds his weapon and appears to try to return fire even after he goes down you may keep shooting until he stops being a threat.

It isn't about how many rounds are fired and we need to understand that Hollywood has made for many myths, including the one shot instant kill. It is about being responsible for your actions even in a stressful time. Remember, everybody carries a camera these days and you never know if you will wind up on YouTube. There will always be a discrepancy between what you do and what you remember but you don't want that to be an egregious discrepancy.

I do strongly recommend that anyone who owns a gun with the idea of self defense spend the money on a quality course. There are a lot of do's and don't's when it comes to self defense shooting and being under fire is not the time to try to figure them out.

@smoothandlow84 , I am not trying to attack you and I do thank you for opening this part of the discussion. This is an area I've had some training and done a bit of reading on and with gun rights under constant attack I do try very hard to counter bad information with good. I will say that I have received the same advice that you have given from Law Enforcement before, but what they deal with is only the tip of the iceberg if you ever have to use your gun. The DA may not prosecute, but not every state has protections against civil suits if criminal charges are not pressed. Remember, the threshold for losing a civil case is much lower than that of a criminal case.

@ScottyB good advice.

@hatzie by disabling the HEI isn't that the same effect.

Scotty B...no worries about offending me. I too have weapons training as well as a background in law enforcement.

I didnt mean to hijack this thread...

in regards to theft deterrents on the older squares, they are easy to break into (all vehicles have glass)....and simple to break into the column. The electronics are very basic. With late model vehicles being computer equipped, although they have safeguards in place, with the knowledge and right equipment ANY vehicle can be stolen in under a minute. X2 with the chipped key comment

Here in Az we have the legal right to use deadly force, especially when threatened by a gun. "You're only justified in using deadly physical force when a reasonable person would believe that it's immediately necessary to protect against deadly force." State v. Andersen (App. Div.1 1993) 177 Ariz.381, 868 P.2d964

Under ARS 13-411,

Arizona permits the use of force when preventing the commission of certain serious crimes:

"To apply, you must be in a place you are lawfully allowed to be. Also, you must reasonably believe that the level of force used is necessary to PREVENT the following specific crimes...armed robbery, aggravated assault, sex crimes, burgulary arson, kidnapping, manslaughter, murder, sexual assault with a mjnor, and child molestation. As always, the degree of force must be immediate."

while Az doesn’t have "Castle laws" and "Defense against home intruders", it does permit physical and deadly force when reasonable and immediately necessary to PREVENT serious crimes including burgulary in the first and second degree. This does not mean that if someone is stealing your cell phine or tv from your home or business that you can use deadly force. If the intruder has a weapon and simultaneously threatens you then deadly force can be used.

So in a nutshell, Az gun laws are fairly straightforward, unlike most other states.

That's nice to see, but I would be surprised if there aren't any DAs that would jump all over a self defense shooting where someone dumped a mag. Not to mention the risk of collateral damage for every time you pull the trigger.

....true regarding " dumping a mag. " like you stated previously, one shot, two shots, sometimes three shots and a person driven by fight or flight wont stop when shot. If the assailant is high on drugs, that also change the situation as well.

Now on the other hand, if you empty and reload, that will get you in trouble. That would could be considered premeditated and excessive force.

Collateral damage, yes that is always a concern as well. Looking beyond the target is important. That's another reason for not shooting with one eye closed as you loose your peripheral vision and thus the ability to see beyond a target.

In regards to the da's, that too depends on the state in which they paractice and that states laws regarding self defense and gun laws. Washington state is a very different sitauion than Az. Different laws, different definitions etc. That goes back to what was stated previously. ....individuals need to know their rights depending on the state in which they live.

You should youtube search Las Vegas cop shooting....there was a video released recently involving a LVPD sargeant in pursuit of an suv. Shots were being fired at the patrol unit from the suv. The officer in the chase vehicle shot through his windshield at the suv while driving in a residentail area. You want to talk about collateral damage! I'm pretty sure that internal affairs is gonna put a few marks on that officers docket.

Okay...lets get back on the original topic .....

Let's see if I can explain this without a picture.

Cut the wire going to the HEI or the coil (not the one going to the points). Install an in line fuse about 20 amps.

Run a wire to a hidden switch to ground. This wire attaches to the in line fuse closest to the HEI.

Flip the switch when you leave the car.

Bad guy tries to start car. Fuse blows. Now there is no power going to the HEI.

Even if bad guy finds the switch, he needs a new fuse as well.

Cheap and effective unless he tows it.

Keep lots of fuses in the truck. Guarantee you will forget to throw the switch and blow the fuse. Several times. I had this setup on my '63 409, and I went thru a LOT of fuses. Sold the 409 in '70 and have been crying ever since.

I'm trying to picture this wiring diagram, can you draw it on paper and post the pic? thanks

This is quick and dirty drawing.

Normal position is DPST is off. The system is not grounded. Power goes thru fuses.

To activate throw the DPST switch. This grounds the HEI and the starter circuits. Some one tries to start car, both fuses blow and both system are still connected to ground. Neither the starter or the HEI will work.

Bad guy finds switch. Tries to start car. Has no effect since they are grounded.

Bad guy has to find the fuses and have that fuse with him or must rewire around the fuses (two).

Can he put jumper wire from Battery to HEI. Yes if he has one. Can he use screwdriver to connect starter pole to 12 V pole on solenoid. Yes. Keep hood locked. But switch must be found to unground units.

Then he has to tow it away.

Stop all thefts. No. But you can tow a new car away as well with all its magic security stuff.

Working on updated version with GPS locator to improve design.

GPS locator.

Get old unused cell phone. Wipe phone clean. Must be active. Put cell phone locator app on phone. have cell phone charger always plugged in. Hide phone and charger in car.

P.S. Make sure ringer is turned off.

Still thinking this one thru.
