Great info, and exactly what I was thinking. Thank you.

Is there a "better" compressor than the A-6 I have on there? Is the shorter compressor (the R-4?) any better or offer any benefits other than size? Also, If I were to change it out, then it is going to alter the alignment of my belts right? I can't imagine that putting the smaller compressor on would still have the pulley located in the same spot...

Since the system is empty now It only makes sense for me to upgrade/replace what I can/should.

Sanden flx7 or similar would be a better compressor. But you are in to aftermarket brackets and custom hose at that point. Everything is available and coldhose place can make hoses for it, but not from a local parts stores most of the time

The A6 is a seriously oversize compressor... But it's heavy and uses more hp than the newer Sanden units.
The Sanden more than makes up for the lack of displacement with a more efficient design.

It's kinda like comparing the MK V 454 to the 6.0 & 6.2 LS motors. The stock lower displacement LS will walk all over the un-modified carbureted 454.

When I get to the step of getting my A/C working again, I'm going with this A6 replacement by Four Seasons 58096. Fits on the factory brackets. Your A/C set up looks like mine. It is used prior to 1/1/85, at least for California emissions. After that a Da6 compressor was used with dual smog pumps.

This was a Nevada truck, and the 454 was swapped in so theres a good chance all of the components could be from a pre 85 to make it all work.
