Narrower dually axle

I have a 78 1 ton, and am going to run 22 Alcoas. I've been told I will need to narrow my rear end to get them to tuck when bagged. Is a 3/4 ton narrower? Can I find a rear end to swap instead of narrowing mine? Thanks

I dont think that you would have to narrow the rear axle in order to "tuck" the rear tires in the fenders. Factory fenders should acccomodate the with of the axle with tires. The offest of the alcoas are the bigger question. If the offset isnt working for you, it may be a better option to fabricate and widen the rear fenders rather than shorten the rear axle.

A rear axle from a single rear wheeled truck will bring the wheels in 2 or 3 inches per side. It would need to be from a 1 ton truck to be a bolt-in deal.

So can I change that axle hub back to duals then? I'll have 16.5" of wheel, so will 2"-3" be enough?

You won't have to, the duals work with the SRW hub too.

I couldn't tell you really. I've never bagged anything. If you get a rear axle from "cab and chassis" C30 dually, it will have a narrower track width than the SRW axle. I'd assume that would be way too 'tucked' though.

I appriciate the info. I just found out the rear end needs narrowed 8"!!

8" is more than it will help, but a C&C axle is about 4" narrower. I have one from a 1 ton sitting in my back yard at the moment.

I read that a c&c was 11" shorter? So 8" is too much?

C&C is 63.5" WMS to WMS, standard single wheel is 67.5". You can do some swapping of hubs and stuff between the two to change widths, unlike the regular duelly axle, but I don't know exactly how they come out once you start that.

Google the 14 Bolt Bible and you'll get a lot of info.

If it was my personal project, I would keep it simple and just source wider fenders. I think that by narrowing the rear axle you may be opeing a huge can of worms. But hey, thats just my opinion.

I was thinking the issue mightnot be that you just need to narow the rear end but you may need to bring the springs inboard more because if the wheels are wider then they will cause the tires to touch the springs. I might be mistaken though.

My rims now are 7.5" wide and I'm going with 8.25" so that's only .75" differnce. I've just been researching amds that's what I've seen. I'll do some more digging. Thanks. Big Chip thanks for that link, and rpcraft I am bagging it so springs wont be an issue, haha.
