Like everyone else, I miss having a cup holder in my 87 so I set out to try to design a drink holder that can fold up and slide into the ashtray.

Below is a drawing that I have been refining and I hope to make my first prototype soon.

Just looking for what people think and what would people pay for a cup holder like this. I think I have enough space to add a 12 volt port as well.

Is the plan to install this where the removable part of the ashtray goes? If it's a simple drop-in it looks like a good idea.

I assume the earlier trucks are the same, but since there's a lighter, a.k.a. "power port" in the ashtray on mine I don't know that it pays to add the complexity. A USB port OTOH, may make sense.

Because of the limited space, I planned to remove the ashtray and cut some of the metal out that holds the ashtray in place. The drink holder would then be secured to a piece of aluminum that needs to be pop riveted in place. I need to create step by step instructions with the pieces and fasteners. In other words, "some assembly required".

I know a lot of people wouldn't mind, but I have a real dislike for sawing up my truck. So that would be a no-go for me.

If you could make it into a cartridge that would replace the removable ashtray I would think you'd get more takers. But that would probably require people to use very small cups. If space doesn't allow that, how about something where you can swap out the entire assembly? Probably too complex and expensive. Sigh. It's never easy, is it?

sadly that only fits standard size cans and smaller stuff.
That is the reason for travel cups that have a smaller diameter bottom piece(to fit in the cup holder).

I converted mine to a ‘always on’ dual USB port high speed marine quality charger.

I have one of those and it's handy but the holders are small. My Yeti mug or anything with a coozie wont fit. They could have made them a little bigger.
