I've found that sometimes sellers will put a stupid high price on their items when they run out of stock on them. So instead of taking the ad down and then recreating it when new inventory comes in they just keep it up, edit it for a ridiculous price so no one will buy it, and then bring it back down whenever inventory is back in stock. Could be a possibility here

Probably one of those guys who watches the infinite amount of "reality" tv shows where people buy, "build" and flip vehicles thinking his rusted, immobile, beat up truck is worth 100 times more than it is.

That's exactly what he wants you to do, is email him to ask the price. So then he'll deal direct with you and not have ebay fees. Or, he's out of stock but wants his ad to continue to run, so he upped the price so nooone will bid. There's a reason he did it.

Yeah, that asking price is a little out there. Either he believes that he'll be able to recoup everything he spent, or he just listed it for sale to get the wife off his back, and put that price on it because he wants to keep it.
