Silly question, but I'm not anywhere near my rig for a couple weeks and I'm trying to order everything for my tune up. Doing RD oil change when I'm home. Any easy way to tell if your rear is a locker or Lim Slip? Never looked into it. It's a K10 w/ a GM 10 bolt. 8.5 I believe, that's what the cover seems to suggest anyways.

It's pretty easy with the cover off. If you want, take a pic of it and post it here then someone will identify it for you.

Whatever. I have beaten the living hell out of an 8.5 inch 10 bolt for a very, very, long time. I'd swap my truck 12 and D44 in a heartbeat.

Hi All; just a question, is there a quick way to get front hubs off a 1988 V1500 GMC sub?

About everything. Like the difference between a Chevy 305 and an Olds 307.

And that's without going into the differences between the different model dana 70's themselves.

They are both Very. Freaking. Strong.
Dana 70 probably more so. Sure weighs more than an already heavy bitch the 14 bolt.

Wouldn’t a Chevy 307 and an Olds 307 be a better comparison. They are equally turds as a 14ff and D70 are equally strong? Lol I’m guessing some may not know the joys of the craptacular Chevy 307 though. Lol

Ring gear size is the same, 10.5". Pinion diameter and axleshaft diameter (depending on year break) are the same or nearly the same. Both are full-floating. D70 doesn't have the pilot bearing on the pinion like the 14b ff which helps with pinion deflection. Axle tube diameter is the same. Not sure of the differences in hub/carrier/pinion bearing sizes. D70 has a wider gear selection into the 7s where the 14b ff lowest gear is I think 5.38. 14b ff is much more plentiful compared to the D70 making it's cost and replacement parts cheaper. Also the carrier spanners in the 14b ff in my opinion is a much better and faster way to set up backlash than the carrier bearing shims in the D70.

What i'm trying to get at is why did GM offer both for 1 tons? Especially when considering both are close to each other in strength?

This is different than why did gm offer a 4.3 and a big block in the same truck (example 1990 1/2 ton......)

Usually winning contract is why. Or if vehicles are being produced for the government, it could be a requirement of the contract.

The d70HD that GM used on the dually trucks ran a 4" axle tube with 1/2 walls. Can't recall if there were any differences in the shafts themselves, but was thinking there were for some reason. As far as I aware, the 70HD was the only one GM used wasn't it? All tye other flavors of D70 were used by the other manufacturers.

I'll take your word for it. I would assume it would be C&C type applications, but GM also had 14 bolts designated for C&C
