Looking for some comments to determine if I should pursue rebuilding the original 305 SB Chevy with some upgrades and added performance or just go crate 350 and be done. No looking for the cheaper but what limitations and or benefits there could be. Thanks in advance.

Crate motor all the way. For the cost of rebuilding the boat anchor 305, you'll be much happier with the performance of the 350.

I just had to choose between rebuilding my 350 or buying a crate. Opted for the crate. Some people claim they can rebuild cheaper than a crate, but for $1500 you get a brand new 260hp motor set on your doorstep with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. You can't beat it.

i had a roller 305 in my 77 3/4 ton long bed ... motor was from a camaro, i put a cam, eddy intake and headers into 2.25 pipes with flows... that thing hauled ass!!! now if you have the money for a crate 350, go that route for sure, cant beat the warranty... and you can beat on the motor all day long and not worry if it blows up lol

I just ordered the 260hp crate for mine today. I thought I would have buyers remorse but I don't yet. I think I will like it better than the rebuild I would have been able to do on the old motor. Either way you go, good luck.

Skweegle, thanks. Where are you purchasing the crate if I may ask? Thanks

I got mine from JEGS three years back. They're in Columbus, OH, so the delivery will probably be only a day or two to you. $1580 with free shipping. And it's in stock and would ship tomorrow. Hard to beat.

I bought mine from summit, but you can buy the same motor from Jegs or EBay. $1579.00 delivered to your door. I also spent $119 on a set of summit long tube truck headers. I have a freshly build qjet carb to throw on top of it and I think it will suit me just fine.

I know a lot of guys are suggesting the 260hp crate, but I would consider the L31-R also. Roller cam, 1 pc. rear main seal, and better compression with Vortec heads. The only drawback is I am unsure of the fuel pump mounting pad. I think you may need to run an electric pump because there is no provision for a mechanical pump.
