I had recently just replaced the ignition cylinder in my k5 and all was working well. Today i noticed that the ignition dose not lock, but the steering wheel will. I can turn the thing from "lock' all the way to start, and actually start the truck without the key in. I know these trucks are not very secure by any stretch of the of the imagination but i would like for it to be just a little harder to steal after you get past the door. Dose anyone know anything i can do before i just replace the whole cylinder again?

Your new ignition lock cylinder has failed already. It's not unheard of with the aftermarket units.

That is unfortunate, is there a brand that is regarded as better than most?

I may get pelted with rocks for this one, but the cheapie MasterPro cylinder from O’Reilly’s has been bulletproof for me thus far. It’s a year and half old and well used.

Last time I replaced one, I got a nice Napa Ecklin cylinder and it only made it a few days before springs were coming out and it got jammed up. So I got one from the Chevy dealer and it's still in my car and working fine.

But I've also installed several used GM cylinders in my cars too. Between years of junkyard outings, swap meet specials and parting out cars, I've accumulated more than a few really nice working lock cylinders.
