Was looking at a '76 today with a th400 and this behind it.
It was a full-time 4x4 truck but the shiftier doesn't look stock and the knob has a 2hi selection in the middle just below the neutral position.
Help? 203, 205, 208, full-time? Votes?

That appears to be a np205.

That is an NP205 part time case, and the speedometer cable is disconnected.

Why do you think it is full time 4x4?

It does appear to be a NP205 by the shift linkage but NP205 is Part time. NP203 is Full time.

It was originally a fulltime truck has the stickers all over. Didnt have a tag on the case and I'm really more familiar with 208s

As far as I know, the 205 is the ONLY one with the small circle that has three bolts between the main centerlines. the np203 would have a protrusion on the forward side of the of the output for the front diff.

Definitely a 205 as said above the 205 is the only one with that little cover.

And it has that crappy slip joint tailshaft thingy. But still one the best TC out there. You can twin stick 'em.
If behind a TH400 it would have the 32 spine female I think ?

"crappy slip joint tailshaft thingy"?
The tailshaft? Is there a good upgrade; the SYE right?
Where do I score One of those?

You can look up the parts for a SYE online. Check offroad design or advance adapters. I think you could also find old parts for a standard setup but it might be best to go with new parts rather than old parts.

So what exactly is wrong with the "crappy slip joint tailshaft thingy", compared to the other?

it leaks when the driveshaft comes out, as compared to a fixed yoke does not. ON the trail or if you wheel hard that can be a big problem. Other than that, for daily driving, you don't really need to concern yourself.

Thanks Robert,
on hard core trail rigs with long travel shocks/suspension a slip yolk off the Tc just dosn't have the strength when the rear axle is fully drooped. There might only be a few inches of spline shaft left inside.
Folks like ORD make slip joint eliminator kits which is a shaft and seal ring. Then your choice of yolk and a CV joint. Then you can tip your rear axle upwards pointing it at the yolk. It's very nice.
A reverse shackle device drops the rear of the leaf lifting the truck, and also rotates the rear axle to point in generally the way it needs to be. Can fine tune with degree shims between leafs and pad. Dropping the rear of the springs also does a few other things too, it moves the rear axle forward and some say it improves the action of the suspension. The axle's path of bump compression is improved. But this is subjective or imagination or ********... or true.
Slight deviation off the simple Tc I.D. question but this is impertant stuff guys.
