so, i got the bench seat out of the '85 k20 today and ripped out the rubber?/vinyl? flooring.

i knew there was rot and now i need to know what the 'vertical' area is called.

is it footwell, that i'm looking for?
or kick panel?

not the floor pan, i'm pretty slow but i got that one figured.

and also, what is the part called that the weather stripping clips onto?

inner rocker? door sill?

the driver's side is trashed even worse than the passenger side.

thanks for the help.

The first picture is the kickpanel.
The second picture the lip that holds the weather stripping on is the outer rocker
Here is a crude drawing I whipped up, but it serves the purpose for illustration.

I wouldn't really call that trashed, this is trashed:

Which just today I finished the passenger side. New outer/inner rockers, kick panels, cab supports, cab braces, the floor is part 74 GMC, repop metal, and homemade patches.

My passenger's side is similar to WebMonkey's. I know on mine there is a fresh air vent right above the rusted area - is this vent where the water come from causing the issue?

That vent can cause leaks. The cowl drains into that area. Of the drains in there are plugged they can back fill into the floor board. The seal on those vents can leak. Mine didn’t. But the seals were shot. Replaced them any ways. The vent door can splash up if it’s bad. Also recommend a replace. But in my opinion biggest culprit is the windshield. It has a few channels that leak when plugged. If the gasket separates from the cab it’ll leak behind the windshield from the top. Doors not set right can leak. And the spot welds across the firewall where the cowl meets it can rust if the body filler goes bad.

you guys are right about the trashed level.

i'm basing my assessment on my level of metal working competency.

around a negative 2, at present.

Practice makes perfect but, nobody's perfect. So practice on. One day you'll say, "I did pretty good".

Thats rough lol. That passenger toe board is bad, but with a metal brake or makeshift brake its not too hard to make that piece.
On the bright side your double cardan joint looks good.

I've already fixed most of it. I need to redo the tranny tunnel though. There is nothing there to weld to and the cab is sagging again from no middle support. Need a ton of work on the firewall also. Maybe this summer I can get back to it.
