Finally bought a square and I'm in love. 82 GMC 1 ton dually, 350, 2WD, 4 speed(Well if you count granny gear, I guess 3 speed with granny? Eh who knows). Always loved these trucks but I'm still new to them. Does anyone know off the cuff what tranny I might have? Also this thing runs out of gears reeeeeal fast so eventually id like a 5 or 6 speed but not sure what would hold up or even fit up in this truck, I'm guessing T5 is out of the picture seeing as how its fairly light duty but what about a T56 or ZF tranny? I know rear end has a lot to do with driveability too but I'd just as soon leave well enough alone. Sorry I kinda got long winded with it but anyone got any ideas? Greatly appreciated

You currently have a m465. an nv4500 would be like what you currently have plus an overdrive gear.

Ayye thanks that's what I was looking for. Any idea how much that od gear would help on the road? I mean in actual practical use not just the gear ratio

The nv4500 is what GM used in their 3/4 and 1 ton trucks when they retired the m465. You'd need to look up what the overdrive ratio was to find out what kind of rpm you would be turning at speed with your rearend gear and tire height. I would think it would give you a few more mpg. The 4500 is a 5 speed, so as far as practicality goes theextra gear should only help drivability.

Your rear gears is what probably makes it run through gears fast, likely 4.56. I'm not sure how much a .75 overdrive gear will help your highway rpms. Need to put a tach on it and see how much Rs you're actually turning.

I think any extra gears are gonna be helpful, the 3 I use now are gone as fast as they come I'd take anuthing I could get lol i figured rear gearing would be the issue but more gears more better eh?

I may be wrong but I believe the 4500 is not an overdrive. I hope someone chimes in with the facts.
Not all 5 speeds are overdrive.
I would love a 6 speed! 1st bull low, and 6th overdrive! Who makes a transmission like this??

Everything I've read or heard about the nv 4500, describes it as a 465 with an added overdrive gear. Iirc, they were available with a fairly deep first gear, similar to the low on the 465 also.

I just had a nice visit and beer with my engine building brother. He knows more than I... must admit.
He confirmed an nv 4500 is 5th gear overdrive. There's a few 5th gear ratio options out there too.
Might not want to call an nv4500 a 465 with overdrive though... the 465 is much stronger through and through
than an nv4500. But the point is well taken.

Most of what I know about the nv4500 comes from the offroad world. It was a popular swap if you could afford to pick one up. Everything I had heard put them as comparable to the 465 as far as strength went, although they did require running a specific GM fluid,as opposed to regular gear lube. And, they were a 3/4 and 1 ton truck trans. Iirc, the only manual 5 speed that the 1/2 tons got was the nv3550, after they went to the gmt400 platform. It doesn't surprise me that there were different o/d ratios available, i seem to recall hearing that there were a couple different 1st gears too.
