83 C20 with TH350.
The drive gear for the speedo has slipped off the spot it is supposed to ride, and the spring clip has disappeared, or was not even installed when the previous owner of the truck had the tranny rebuilt.
I am having trouble getting the gear back onto the shaft, will have to wait until the new spring clip I ordered online arrives.
But, any hints to set the gear back in place without breaking it with a large two jaw puller would be much appreciated.

THANK YOU for the suggestion, I like the principle behind it, would spread out the stress over almost the whole gear surface.
And, of course, as it typical around my place, any project to be done requires at least one more to be done first.

You're welcome, pretty much the same as the one you buy except a 100 times cheaper, lol..

Well, the gear is off, used a puller like yours in conjunction with a steering wheel/harmonic balancer puller on the end of the shaft, and it came off easy in one piece.
Now a new problem has arisen, the vertical flat tabs on the spring clip are too tall to allow the gear to slide over it into place.
I start with the tab in the shaft to locate the clip, but the gear won't go on.
Do I need to grind a tad off of the flat tabs, or is there a secret method I'm not finding to get it on ?

IDK if this will help you at all but it's all they mention about the process:

Something new all the time, never seen that before, but the clip fit the old one so it should fit the new one, compare the depth of the slot in the gears, may got a bad one???, guess you could grind some off the tab, I'd take the gear back if it the slot isn't right, you did push the tab down as you slid the gear on right??

I had to go with plan C because plans A and B would not work.

I used my dremel tool and ground a bit off the tabs, the gear is now solidly in place and isn't going anywhere.

There is still plenty of tab left to hold the gear.
