I have an '81 C20 8600 GVWR with a 350 and I need a new heat riser to pass smog. The mechanic was chasing down an intermittent ticking sound that sounds like the typical exhaust leak and he says a bad heat riser is responsible. Any idea where I can get one. I've been doing internet searches with no luck so far.

You are right. No one seems to have one. What about the wrong one, this old mechanical thermal type may work:

Or what about fitting in the wrong one? Would this look like yours? For the price of this unit, maybe just replace the exhaust with headers.

Yes the OP is looking for the vacuum operated unit. I would think the only resulting difference is the vacuum type would open sooner being controlled by coolant temperature, instead of waiting for the exhaust to get hot enough for the mechanical type to open.

Thanks for the replies. I think your swap ideas are great. I snapped a couple photos of the valve. It has a post that a linkage hooks to. I looked at a few other images of valves and some late 70's - early 80's Corvette ones are close.
