So my 87 k10 came with aluminum set of wheels on it.The guy also threw in a set of rally wheels with the truck. One rally wheel is black another blue and two silver.Ive been reading and watching videos online about restoring the aluminum ones. The finish is pretty much worn off them. I watched a guy take air craft stripper to the wheels to get the clear coat off of them.He prepped the wheels and primed and painted them with chrome spray paint and they looked good. Then I thought why not take my buddy's sandblaster to the steel rally wheels and clean those up.I do like the look of the rally over the aluminum.Anybody repainted their wheels and can give me advice before I start?

not much to it. Especially if you have access to a sandblaster. Just make sure you clean them good when your done blasting, then use a good primer.

paint'n rallies

I used a single-stage paint, no clear. Painted these in 2008, although they have never seen winter snow and salt.

You can still make the rallys look good just sand them down and get the right color paint.

The only trouble with using sandpaper, is that it doesn't get to the corrosion down in the seams. I tried that route with the steel wheels on my '88, sanded, degreased, primed, painted, and cleared. they all started bubbling up from the seams and looked like hell this spring. After only a year or so.

Looks along the lines of graphite, anthracite, or a charcoal.

If you do get them blasted, sanded, cleaned or whatever very good, to make for a good paint job that will hold up and the paint stick very well, you might want to spend the few extra bucks and use Self Etching primer before paint.

x2 on the Self Etching primer. Home Depot carries Rust-Oleum SE primer, price is good, easy to apply, sticks well; used it on a set of OEM wheels 2 years ago which are holding up great.
