My 1987 Silverado has over heated the solenoid since I had the Hooker ceramic headers installed. I have to wait for it to cool down before it will start. I contacted JEGS. I got my headers there. They said the starter insulated wrap would fix it. It did not. I don't want to remove the headers but this never happened before. I can't have this dependability. What should I try next ?

:welcome: Lot's of folks will fab up a heat shield or switch to a newer "mini" starter from a newer truck to give more space between the headers and starter.

Welcome from the Texas Panhandle.

I prefer a starter heat shield. The wrap might hold moisture, and cause rust.
I made one from 18ga galvanized, and never had any more problems. Aftermarket ones can be bought too.

I didnt know about factory minis till FrankinChevy mentioned it and with a heatshield!!
I bought a proform mini. A LIL on the expensive side and Im having a few issues with shimming it as per instructions. Its like russian roulette with the grind 10 good starts grinddddd.
Flywheel is in good cindition and starter pinion is already taking a hit. Other than that the aftermarket mini works well with my heddman headers and restarts and I live in the southwest desert.
Next time Im looking into the favtory mini though.

Proform may have not been the way to go either. A starter off of a 96 and up 350 Vortec from a junk yard probably would have done the trick. Proform is China made stuff and doesn't always come with good fitament.

Howdy!

One other thing to mention, the new headers might have just made it more obvious that the existing starter is failing.
