Thanks y'all. Im going to replace my fuel pump tonight (as when it get hot, it airates and that could be that stupid plastic clear filter too, but all I see are bubbles and the try dying). I have the idle down to 700-800 ish, so next Im checking the secondary plates as I bog when they should be opening (to the point if I held my foot into it, it will choke the engine dead). Then, I believe, and without checking, Im not sure, but I think I have the newer q-jet that has the screw on top to adjust the metering rods. This thing is just running pig rich, not only by smell but by mileage too. Im glad Im just not crazy and believe that I should be getting 15 ish... especially with this big dumb wheels on it. (Im trying to sell / trade them off for rallys). You'd figure that the rebuilder would have set the floats properly. And the only vacuum line I have is going to the dist and one on the back of the intake for the brakes. So there isnt a whole lot to leak.

question... The rebuilder says that my 5-8 mpg issue is that it had 74-76 metering rods and that it should be 70.

This carb: spits, sputters, doesnt want do over 3000 rpms, bogs, dies, doesnt start or idle correctly, and just plan runs rich. All of the issues happen at any rpm.

Do you think its just metering rods?

BTW. stock 305 w/ 700r4

My 85 gets 14-15 on commute to work with some 2 lane hwy and some city combined. It is bone stock but i rebuilt the QJ when I first got it. The initial timing is supposed to be 4 on mine but I have it on 8 degrees.

I have mine set to 10. I put this leaking (not leaking after I removed it and put in a new accelerator pump) holley double pumper. Gah, this truck runs great now. I just want this q-jet to be fine. Pulling it off, it looks like the power valve isnt correct either as the horn gasket is soaked in fuel.

I think it’s the part between the intake and aircleaner that’s bad.

Last I checked my K5 was killin 14.1 mpg on the highway runnin 33s and a Quadrajet.

See, there is no reason this C10 305/700r4 isnt getting 15+. I expect 15 at least and hoping for 18. grrrrrrr.

I get blamed for everything... If you'd feed your dog better, he'd stop biting you in the ass, and you wouldn't have to muzzle him..:hands:..
