Usually all you need is the hubs. Do yours still work?

I have mixed feelings on the auto hubs these days. I used to have bad experiences with them, but my '86 has a set that still work perfect and they have swayed my opinion a little. They are fine for winter use in the snow I guess, but I'm still convinced one will eventually start to act up. For any type of actual offroad use, manual is a good upgrade.

Exactly! I always hated them, but like I said, that dang '86 has been trying to make my opinion change.

Warn's website says I would need hubs and a transfer case conversation kit
Approximately $350 in parts

When I was looking into doing this conversion to my '79 GMC pickup. I read that you were supposed to engage the transfer case every 100 miles or so in order to lubricate the seals that rely on oil splash from the chain drive for lubrication. I always felt like I would forget that and end up with a leaky T-case.

What would you need to convert? If you are looking at a hub kit to go from full time using a 203 case to part time with locking hubs you would need a part time kit for the 203. But to go from auto to manual hubs you should just need a set of hubs.

Thats pretty straight forward really. If you have the auto locking hubs with three screws holding them on you will need the hubs and the spindle nut kit. the transfer case kit is for the full time 203 case. Full time front axles were engaged at all times.

Has anybody came up with better than factory auto hubs? Mine are still working and it was nice to just pull the handle instead of stopping and engaging manual hubs.

To OP, if yours currently work and you are switching them out, I would be interested in getting the stockers from you to keep spares.

I installed the Warn 20990 kit in my '89 with nothing else required. As I remember it, an easy job even though it was my first exposure to 4x hubs.

There was nothing wrong with the stock auto hubs, I just figured manuals were more reliable. I kept all the parts labeled in case I ever want to switch back but it's tempting to put them on ebay, they're going for crazy prices.

I'm too damn lazy to get out and lock hubs...fuel mileage sucks with 35's anyway.

Any one have a brand preference? I am rocking an 88 K5 and they are all in the same price range of $100. Warn, Mile Marker, Superwinch etc.

You should NOT need the transfer case conversion kit UNLESS you're running the NP203 Full Time transfer case. In your year model, should be an NP208/NP241 part time aluminum Transfer case so conversion is NOT needed.
