there’s an old rule that a fastener should engage to a depth equal to said fasteners diameter i.e. a 9/16” lug nut needs 9/16” depth of thread to thread engagement. Sometimes this can be difficult to measure, say if you have et lugnuts or what not. The manager at America’s/Discount tire in my area told me their rule of thumb on whether they’ll turn down work or not. They say at least 7 full rotations.

This may be common knowledge, it may not. It took some searching to find such a simple answer.

And just in case you stumbled upon this thread looking for torque spec of a 9/16” wheel stud, it’s 130-150 lbs.

I put a dab of anti seize on the end (assuming there isn’t any on there already) and tighten it down. Take it back off and measure how far the anti seize smeared out to.
Now I want to do that and see how far 7 turns gets me lol. (I’m sure it would be plenty)

Mine made it 10-1/2 rotations before I put the torque wrench on it. I thought I only 5/8” engagement, which is why I called America’s Tire initially.

If you know the thread pitch it will tell you how much engagement you get. i.e. if it's 9/16-12 you'll go 1/2" in six turns.

It’s 9/16-18. So at .5833, I’m a little over 9/16 (.5625). Which going by their rule, that’d put 7 turns at .3888” which is a little over 3/8”. That sounds scary.

Could be an issue. A hair over 10 turns at .0555 per turn gets you to .5625" so you're probably okay with your 10-1/2 turns.

I've never ever counted turns when installing a lugnut, but 7 sure seems like not enough.

Another GM flop they made the wheel studs too short....on 4x4 if you run aftermarket wheels you must press in longer studs. Did it to my k10

I agree. kind of surprised America's Tire has a rule like that. I feel pretty good about my 10-1/2 with stock length studs on aluminum wheels. if it were much less I'd definitely swap up for longer studs.

I barely eeked out what makes me feel comfortable with stock studs on aluminum wheels. over 9/16" engagement, which was my minimum target based on stud diameter. only time will tell if they gall or back off.

I was warned that the lugs will come loose with Aftermarket wheels and that's why I extended my studs.....my buddy said he would re-torque the wheels every 100 miles.....screw that!

OK, this leads to a logical question. Where does one find a longer wheel stud for these trucks?

Dorman makes wheel studs in different lengths and sizes. You will need to know the diameter, thread pitch, and knurl length of the current stud plus the overall length desired.
