I think most folks use the "Argent Silver" paint on the grills and headlights. Same color as the factory rallies. I need to do this to mine as well. Some of the guy's that have actually done this will chime in shortly as well.

Krylon 1403 "Dull Aluminum" is the Argent Silver equivalent that I used. Eastwood sells the actual Argent Silver, but it's wheel paint. This was on a GMC grille, but that should be what you're looking for on the Chevy, too.

The wheel paint version of argent is a high temp variety which will last longer-the sun plays hell of these grills.

The Chevrolet grills are indeed argent silver but the GMC grills are not. They are more of a flat silver-no metallic. After painting I also use an automotive UV inhibiting clearcoat as well-2 nice coatings and the grills will last a long time!

@gmachinz VERY nice looking work - willing to divulge anymore details on these GM grills? ;) I'm about to do my '83 and wondering what the silver was that you used if it wasn't argent. rattle can or 2 stage? one color all across or are the fins a darker grey? what about the red on the emblem - i'm reading that hugger orange was the OE color but what you've got there is more red/less orange and looks very sharp! I'm thinking about picking up some model paint...

also, anyone using adhesion promoter first?

1983 has a plastic chrome plating-not really something that can easily be duplicated. The flat silver on the fins are tuff to do on those years (1981-83) GMC grills.

I found a dark gray for the inserts that has just a hint of metal flake in it. Looks really good when the sun hits it from the right angle. Krylon Fusion for Plastic, Textured Shimmer 2520. It's listed as black but goes on gray. Did mine seven or eight years ago and it hasn't faded or chipped at all.
