Any update on this? Looking to work on my 350 but the thought of tearing into it terrifies me. Looking forward to following this thread and seeing your progress!

Gonna have surgery on my foot next week, hopefully I'll crack it open pretty soon.

Will try to take a lot of photos along the whole way.

Dude.

Instead if a quart of oil, try Marvel. Then dex. Get the heads rebuilt and buy a new intake gasket.
If that doesn't shut up the tick,. . ., well never mind, it will. Ticks come out of the heads, not below decks. I bet you've gif a sticky lifter and bad valve seal , possibly a leaking intake.

So, been pretty much a year now... and the engine still needs to be done.

Currently have the following:

Summit SUM-121155 High Volume, Std. Pressure Oil Pump
Melling MEL-IS-55E HD Hardened Oil Pump Drive Shaft
Billet Specialties BSP-95129 Polished Aluminum Valve Covers
Mr.
Gasket MRG-4364 180 Deg. Thermostat
Sealed Power SLP-260-1269 Full Gasket Kit

Thinking about also getting the following:

Comp Cams K12-422-8 Retrofit Hyd. Roller Cam & Lifter Kit
RPM Range: 1,600 - 5,400
Intake Duration (0.050"): 218 deg
Exhaust Duration (0.050"): 224 deg
Advertised Intake Duration: 270 int. / 276 exh.
Valve Lift (Factory Rockers): 0.495" int. / 0.502" exh.
Lobe Separation: 110 deg.
Valve Spring OD: 1.430"

Included parts: Retro Lifters, Springs, Retainers, Locks, Valve Stem Seals, Timing Chain & Gears.

Flowtech Headers BIG-11506FLT Long Tube Headers (1-5/8" Primaries
Planning on painting them with high temp paint and wrapping them as well to help keep underhood temps down for better radiator cooling.

HEI Distributor Kit. Go OEM parts or just pick up an aftermarket kit?

Pretty sure I'd still need to pick up a set of air filters for the valve covers, pushrods, thrust button & wear plate, then rework the exhaust to work with the headers (planning to step up to 2.5" exh at some point anyway), spark plugs, spark plug boot covers to save them from getting burned up (already have two burned up on the right bank with the stock manifolds), figure out a little bit of a better routing system for the wires.

Haven't checked the casting number, but pretty sure I've got the 76cc Smogger heads with the smaller valves. Probably 1.94/1.50?
Anyway, what all would need to be done to them machining wise to run that .495/.502 cam? Milling out the spring seat to allow for a longer and wider spring? What about valve lengths or rockers?

Using Camquest, the 12-422-8 Cam (XR270HR Grind) will supposedly make around 273 HP @ 5000 / 342.9 ft-lbs @ 3500 RPM at a 8.5:1 CR, factory manifolds, and 750CFM Carb (Quadrajet).

After adding a set of headers (and still maintaining 8.5:1CR), it'd supposedly free it up to 328.5 HP @ 5000 / 394.9 ft-lbs @ 4000 RPM

And if I bump up to a better flowing and performing set of heads at 10:1 CR, supposedly would increase to 359.3 HP @ 5000 RPM / 421.3 ft-lbs @ 4000 RPM.

Considering that I currently cruise at about 2800-3000 RPMs on the freeway, I'd be sitting around halfway through the powerband and below the peak torque & HP. Meaning that I'd have more power available for some extra getup and go at the freeway speeds. This would definitely be useful when needed to pass someone on a 2 lane highway (not that there are that many of those around in the city).

I get that this is only a computer simulation and that the real world performance may not reach these numbers (since it doesn't include the power losses due to alt, P.S., water pump, A/C, etc.), but they don't sound too bad to be pulling out of a 350.

Just cracked the covers off the heads on the truck.

Casting number is 3973487

A little research shows that they're either 1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6 valves with a 75/6cc chamber. They're the original heads, so anyway to know which one it is without pulling them from the block?

Also, what are the overall valve spring diameters? Do those look like they already have a set of dual springs? I believe they've been worked over once before since my father had a mild isky cam installed back in the day.

Gonna come soonish.

Best case scenario plan at the moment is to pull the engine, strip it all down, rehone, rering, and rebuild the heads. Gonna check all the bearings of course, but retro roller cam will be saved for the future.

I just debated rebuild vs crate motor for my work truck. It was a few hundred $$$ less to rebuild provided I didn't need any "out of the ordinary" machining done. I ended up going with the Jegs crate motor delivered for 1600.00. I swapped in a "grunt" cam, Performer intake and Qjet and it runs just fine. I realize that I voided the warranty by putting the aftermarket cam in but it made the 3200 mile trip from NorCal to Alaska with no problem.

Was that a short, long, or fully assembled block?

Do you remember the specs of the one you ordered up?

It was a long block. Pretty low Hp if I remember correctly, I want to say 240hp. You could check Jeg's website.

To run the plug wires this way, should I order the shorter plug wires designed to run over the valve covers, or longer ones for running under the headers?

I always run them over the top, underneath is a royal PITA, but it's matter of preference wether you want to hide them or having them exposed..
