Howdy guys - I just finished putting a 2" lift on my truck, it had a 6" lift before.

After installing I went to drive it, and it won't move in reverse. Does this mean the truck has an extended driveshaft? When I go into reverse and give a little gas, the shifter slaps me in the leg like the trans is getting pressed on. I got my wife to let the clutch out in reverse a few times with me under it to see if I could see any movement. I could see the front shaft moving forward about 2 inches, and the main shaft looked bottomed out in the trans and couldn't see any movement there obviously.

It got dark on me so I thought I would ask here for stuff to work on tomorrow.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is "yes" primarily because I can't think of another cause.

Fairly common. I bet the front shaft isn't catching by very much!

I know when I did a 6" lift on a K5 years ago I had to extend the drive shafts. I recently lifted my K30 3". The trans shop said I should have about an inch of play on the slip yoke coming out of my NP-205. I didn't have to modify the rear shaft, but had to add 3/4" to the front.

Thanks for the replies.
Hoping to find some time today to get under the truck.
I have the NP440/883 trans with a NP208 on mine, makes it real hard to find specs on shaft lengths.

This is what I'm looking at, what do you guys think? Front looks bottomed, is the rear okay?

Well, I took both shafts out and the front shaft was way too long so i removed it for now, but the rear seemed close enough to be able to drive spins freely in the case even pushed fully in, angles could be better but nothing close to binding that I can tell.

Wet line in picture is how far it can travel into the T-case.

However, it still stops reversing or going forward after about 2 feet in either direction. A hard stop, feels like it's stopping in the rear gears.
Any idea what this could be? Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Different gear ratio front and rear? These pictures do not appear abnormal to me..
Did you recently get this truck? Wtf man, stuff like this doesn't only "happen".
Amirite?
You bought it this way and seller unloaded it on you because he could only paint **** and not actually "fix" anything?

Reckon you'll have to independently jack up the front and rear axles to determine the ratio.
?
I understand what you are saying fine but it doesn't make sense lol.
Is one of the axles a "new" swap job?
Can you move the truck minus BOTH driveshafts?

Look a lot like you need to replace some seals on your setup too. All that fluid running down the driveshaft and collecting dirt is not a normal thing.

Well I got it fixed, turned out to be fairly simple just an oversight on my end, probably from too much beer and working in the dark  Feel stupid.. Oh well
Front shaft was too long, and has been removed for now. Good to know.

Truck has a ways to go to be where I want it. Only got it a few months back, had been sitting for years abandoned by someone that couldn't pay for new crate 305 they had put in.

Thanks for the replies

Okay, I forgot to put on the 1/4 spacer that I had on the wheels. They were under a pile of parts in the bed of the truck and I was 8 beers deep.

The front shaft was the original problem, but the 2nd problem was all my stupid fault.

Here's what my front looks like after the rebuild and install. My rear only extended out about 1/2" after the lift. Make sure you have enough engagement when the rear suspension droops. You don't want the yoke to pull out.

Good to hear you got the issue figured out.

So the front shaft was too long and causing bind up between the front axle and transfer case then? I'm guessing it's more like it binds up the ujoints then?

Pretty much, the original problem was that the front shaft was pressed fully in, any movement caused it to bind and then push on the tcase hard.
