Fortunately I "learnt it" the cheap way. My "auto recycler" was actually listening to what I was doing with the engine/ tranny swap and called me back to tell me that. Fortunately he had a 4x2 tranny with only 37k miles on it so my swap will now be a 1999 6.0 and a 2001 4l80e. Glad he caught that and helped a brutha out.

generally all 4x4 and 4x2 versions of various transmissions have at least different length output shaft.

At least that at the very minimum. Some cases the 4x4 cases have thicker bellhousings too.


Sure glad you didn't get stung with the wrong 4L80-E.

Back in the day there also used to be a short tail and long tail TH350 but I'm not 100 % sure what dictated if the vehicle needed.
