I know this is a dumb question but can I change a Dana 44 from 8 lug to 6 lug? I'm trying not to have to change rims. No big deal if I can't, just being cheap!

Yes you can. Pull the backing plate replace with 6 lug one. Install the same spindle and 6 lug hub and rotor.

The year break on spindles (bearing size) is '76 and down for small bearing, '77 and up for large bearing.
