I ran the th400/208 combo for years in my sled pull truck. 600hp Big block with 35 in tires and 4.10 gears. Truck weighs 6500 lbs! The 208s are stronger than anybody gives them credit for. And way more friendly to shirt. For what it’s worth I changed to a sm465/205 combo and took the rear output shaft off the tcase in the first 66 ft of my first pull!

And a much deeper crawl ratio.

Opening up to looking for an NP205 combo will be good too, but be prepared, it'll be a bit more costly, but worth it in the long run, especially since you're running a BB. The NP has other nice features like the ability to have a Twin Stick so you can have 2 wheel LOW to the rear wheels only, where normally you get 4 wheel low only. Then you have the option for FWD ONLY in both Hi and Lo.
Or front wheel drive low/high.

Yup aka FWD. :waytogo: Which comes in handy for front digs getting around a tight corner in between big rocks or trees.

Oh yeah, duh... When I see FWD I convert to 4WD. Oops.
Here in BC we get horrific early winter/late fall gel snow on the streets. FWD is awesome for this. Also off camber logging/mining roads can get scary so pull through rather than pushing is much safer. And the greasy tight switchbacks, as you mentioned getting around big rocks and stuff.

Plus it just looks fricken BOSS to see two shifters in the cab. Well, three including me.

Yes, it is cool as hell looking too. Almost makes we wanna do a doubler for 3 levers even though I have no use for the doubler whatsoever.

The FWD only also comes in handy if you break your rear output shaft, rear driveshaft or rear ring and pinion. You have a better chance of at least being able to drag yourself outta the trails or bush to where you get on a trailer or towed home or even slowly driven home.

Cool twin stick stuff notwithstanding I have to agree that I don't understand 8-Hate. The only significant weakness is the stamped planetary carrier. While I'm sure it can happen I've never personally known anyone to break a chain. And my 208 got me off the road in FWD when the Gear Vendors fell out. If not for the slip yoke I could have driven it home.
