i mentioned this in another thread and was encouraged to put it in the build threads, so here we go.

    i recently bought a '81 k5 silverado from a kid.

he was ready to get rid of it for several reasons:

    1. he has 5 kids and a pregnant wife
    2. it has headers on it and most bolts had vibrated out and it sounded horrible
    3. it had a massive oil leak going down the road @ highway speeds
    4. it had a dead miss on #2

i put bolts in the headers and it's prettry quiet now.
he had already installed a new oil pan and new front and rear seals

i pressure washed the engine compartment and the entire underside of the k5. it was the dirtiest, oiliest vehicle i have ever seen.

    oil was everywhere.

so, there's only a few places oil can exit a sbc.

the bottom end was freshly sealed. the front/rear intake gaskets were dry.
the valve cover gaskets were dry.
the fuel pump gasket was dry.
    the timing cover was dry.

wait for it.................the dip stick tube was broken off at the block! at highway rpms oil was going everywhere.

i removed the broken part (with a 3/8" bolt screwed into it) and installed a new tube and stick.

    pressure washed it again.

the 350 is totally dry now :)

the th350, np208 and both diffs are totally dry also.

when i pulled #2 plug i found cracked porcelain so i installed a new plug and it's now running perfectly.

i've ordered a "header back" exhaust system w/ turbos and hope they get here by friday. i can install the system sat morning.

in the meantime, i'm servicing the diffs, tranny, transfer. greasing every grease fitting/etc.

the truck drives-runs wonderfully. everything works but the ac which is totally been removed except for the evaperator so i have to bascially replace the entire ac system.

at this point i'd prefer to put an underdash unit on it but i can't find any (yet) that will fit into the available space even if i mod the 4wd stick.

any ideas about an under dash unit?

back in the mid 60's i helped my dad install several hundred add on ac's at the local chevy dealership and they always blew super cold.

anyhow, my back's hurting so i'll sum up for now.

this will be a near stock build. my goal is to use the k5 to drive to cloudcroft and eat, to church on sunday and to east texas a couple of times a year.

my wife cant get into my '75 k10 so i'm just gonna run 33x12:50's on the k5

    with no lift.

the body is really good except for right behind the rear wheels and i've fixed that before.

    more later..........

Damn, that one's nice too. 5 kids and a Pregnant wife? So the truck cost you how much and a box of condems?!?!?! Or did you trade straight across for a 3 seat Burban??? :laughing1:

You did real good on that one. Being a New Mexico truck i'd imagine it's a little to no rust truck too huh? Good for you !!! :waytogo:

i DID trade even my '95 suburban 4x4 3 seater :) the kid is in heaven. around hear the 'burbs wont bring $1500 even in good shape. the old k5's like this one will bring $4000+ every day.

mine even has a clean interior. i ordered a new complete carpet kit because my wife is so picky but the interior really didn't need anything but a good cleaning.

:happy175: Imagine that!?!?! So how good am I to guess you traded for a Burb? What about the box of condems? NO?

Same here. I pretty much figured I'm going to settle for a Burb instead of a K5 cuz of the huge price difference. I'd love to have a K5, but even $2000 you're going to get a raped and molested POS that's been tore up to hell and back. You can find Burbs in much better shape, better running and not tore up for $2000. You can find a Burb needing some work for a $1000 sometimes in fair shape, but even a junked out roller K5 they're wanting $1200-$1800.

well, parts are starting to get here.

did oil/filter change yesterday. the engine is a 350 w/ eldelbrock intake and carb. floats were too high so i lowered them .

would have done more but blood pressure got too high and is still up there this am.

if i feel like it i'll service the th350 this afternoon and install new dust cover.

the copper header and collector gaskets and drilled header bolts get here today. the rest of the exhaust system gets here later this week.

blood pressures down so i was able to work on the k5 a little today.

never cared for the factory door pulls so i made my own and some new pull caps.

i also got my new dash mat in today. it's on but needs a few days to settle.

am making a new bowtie emblem for the grill as we speak 'cause mine is gone.

i'm not a purist so i make lots of my own parts :)

my turbos came in today. the header back kit come in tomorrow.

i got my full carpet set ordered yesterday. should be here middle of next week.

gotta order the carpet for the bottom of the doors next.

    just a head's up

i bought the dynomax header back kit

it is a total waste of money

NONE of the pipes will even begin to work on my totally stock '81 blazer.

none of the pipes will even slip into the other and this is supposed to be a clamp together kit

i have been doing my own exhaust since the late 60's

i bought a kit so i wouldnt have to fab a total system

    the kit is worthless

i am fabbing the passenger side as we speak

wire welder idleing and mandrel bender hard at work:)

2.5 hours later i have fabbed a new complete exhaust system for the k5. it's really nice to have a mandrel bender :)

the turbos sound sweet as always.

my new aftermarket console came also.

i'll paint it to match the interior and install it tomorrow.

    see the attached photo.

i bought one for my '75 k10 and love it so much i had to put one in my k5 :)

it holds all my stuff plus 4 cups of capachino.

it's also high enough in both my trucks to use as an armrest

it's also paintable (i'll be doing that tomorrow)

    the rear compartment is HUGE

Ooh, that's cool. That looks really nice. About how much higher does it sit than the stock console?
