I came up with 3.42 as well Once I pulled it out to get a full look. If I rebuild can I put a posi in? There is no difference in housing?

    Lost my rear end.

The differential is completely trashed, the pinion gear is badly damaged, so I would need a complete rebuild. Axle shaft ends got tore up from bouncing down the road. Bearing will not be a problem, I just wonder about the pinion gear, and I will have to look to see if I can find the shims in...

    Lost my rear end.

the two things that make me hesitant to rebuild: is there damage to housing, and shimming to get things within thousands. How hard is it really to rebuild? I will be pulling the rear end off tonight so I should be able to see any obvious damage to housing.

    Lost my rear end.

I can find several rear ends that figments say are for 1988 GMC Sierra 1500, but online they all say will not fit 1987. What is the difference? Wheel base? They are same gearing 3.42.

    Lost my rear end.

My rear end gave out last Saturday, driveshaft and wheel slammed my door and went down the road. Now I am having trouble finding a rear end. 1987 GMC Sierra Classic, 4x4, Auto, 5.7l, 3.42 gears. What other options are there? A complete rebuild might be out of my league. Thisn is a daily...

    Rear axle replacement

I am really struggling with getting the gear ratio. Nothing on body, doors, glove box…. Cannot turn anything in rear end, looks like the ring is 41, pinion looks to be 15, but this is from eying half way and doubling the number. I could be off a couple either way. If I’m right it is 2.73. If...

    Rear axle replacement

I final got it home and took a good look. There is a hole in the differential cover, gears broken. Good news the the only other damage is drivers side door. How can I tell what the gearing is so I can replace the entire rear en? I would assume it is original.

    Rear axle replacement

Thanks for the encouraging words. I think the c clip must have come off, the shaft end still looks pretty good accept for damage bouncing down the road. It did not snap in half, and shows no signs of breaking. The wheel and shaft did hoist the drivers side door and there is a small dent in the...

    Rear axle replacement

I was driving down the road when I heard a thump in the rear end, slowed and pulled to the side but at about 35mph drivers side rear wheel and axle shaft passed me. I was able to keep truck under control and get to the side of the road. Axle shaft pulled out of both sides. I do not see other...

Code 24, when going down hill.

My 87 Sierra 5.7 TBI, is throwing a code 24 when i go down hill. Just got the timing reset, engine is running good. I live in a very hilly area. Not always but maybe 50% of the time i am on a long down hill run it throws a code 24. My speedometer is about 5 mph off, probably from larger...

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

The lack of power problem solved. As I was looking for vacuumed leaks and wires crossed, I discovered that the U shaped brackets that holds down the distributor had slipped and the distributor moved. I reset the timing let the ECP reset and the power is back, I did replace the O2 sensor. the...

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

Sorry for not clarifying, it seems to have less power than it did just two weeks ago. I notice it going up hills the most.

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

I am working on replacing O2 sensor but it is rusted in good and hard to get leverage on wrench. But that will be the first change. I made sure that plug wires were not crossed or touching coil wires. Checked all electrical connections.

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

Can an O2 sensor be tested or just replaced? One other thing I forgot to mention. The truck has an aftermarket Tachometer that plugs into coil, when the lack of power seemed to start the Tach began to jump Around a lot and still does. Even though the engine is not acting up the Tach seems too.

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

No Catalytic converter. I was thinking about squaredeal91”s suggestion, I did have it running with one injector when I was tracking down that issue. Both are pulsing now. I will look into the O2 sensor. Is there one on each side? Timing is another possibility. The wire under the brake...

Lacking power, 87 Sierra 5.7l TBI

I need some help, let me give you background: I have a 1987 GMC Sierra v1500, 5.7l TBI. 51,000 original miles. No rust, had accident when new, some signs of it underneath. Only one fuel tank working. It was in a barn for 10 years, someone started getting it running, change hoses, tires...

    EGR Valve Question

Thanks, I did order a Delphi that is listed on several sites as the correct one.. The one I got was from Auto Zone that they said was for my truck. It came with a bag of what I called spacers, they are washers with different size openings each marked with a number. You are supposed to find...

    EGR Valve Question

I just replaced the EGR valve and CTS, this fixed the very hard start problem in my 87 GMC V1500 350TBI. But the EGR that I got did not have the EGR number of the one I replaced listed so I could not add the correct spacer to match the existing one. Though it starts much better, it misses...
