What new tools have you got lately?

Refurbished my Craftsman 328.12020 2.25 ton floor jack, made in the '70s. Heavy duty, made in Japan model, $49 repair kit and 9 hours of labor spread over 3 days. This thing is heavy and has lots of tiny springs, balls, seals, washers and is well machined on the insides. Old oil was amber, new...

What have you done to your square lately??

4 new Goodyear Wrangler tires installed at Discount Tire, $480 out the door with veteran discount. Very happy with the look and ride, took it up to 75 mph on the highway for a mile and it was a smooth ride. Replaced two tires from 2008 and two tires from 2013, they were getting pretty weather...

    Spare tire carrier?

Back to working on the 1981 C10 truck. When purchased, the spare tire was just tossed in the bed. I finally paid some attention to the rear under the bed. Appears that I have no spare tire carrier: Just a busted and bent stud: (and a bad exhaust pipe hanger) the owners manual shows the "glide...

Help with the name of this part and what does it control.

When it is pulled "on" by vacuum, it opens a flapper that allows exhaust gases to heat the intake manifold area right below the carburetor. With no vacuum, the spring inside pushes the flapper closed, like this:

What have you done to your square lately??

Got in several hours of work while the wife was away. Changed the gear oil in the 4-speed manual trans, a full one gallon drain and fill, did get a bit messy. Also changed the 1/2" npt drain and fill plugs to magnetic plugs ($8 each on Amazon from Crimp Supply). Installed two LOUD horns behind...

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Spent 3 hours working today and got it finished, no real problems, just small parts and lots of patience: The rubber hinge seal assemblies I purchased from LMC (made it Taiwan). My truck appears to have never had these installed, the cowl area screw holes showed no signs of previous screws...

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Email sent to AUVECO, awaiting a response. Finally had a warm (60 degree) sunny day today so I spent time working inside the cowl area. Removed the hinges but left the spring arms on to position the hood out of the way: Not expecting rain overnight, but I still covered things with a tarp and...

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Progress continues. Not perfect, not professional, not even the correct color, but better than before: Rain forecast for the next 4 days, time to work in the garage.

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Interesting used parts available on that site. Thinking about that set of 5 pieces cowl retainers from newer year trucks. Not sure if the newer design is much better for $33 shipped.

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Wow, didn't expect these cowl retainer posts to be extinct. Two hours of internet searching and none to be found, just other people like me who want 3 new ones. Someone in the injection plastic molding industry should reproduce them. At 3 needed per truck, they should sell hundreds per year...

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

The two end fasteners on the cowl are just a sheet metal screw secured with a flat piece that pokes into a plastic piece pushed into the hole. This looks nonstandard to me. The two wiper arms are replacements installed by the previous owner, but they are in great condition. I cleaned and...

Cowl area cleanout, are these fasteners the original correct ones FINISHED!!

Working on the '81 C10, removed the cowl between the hood and windshield. Pretty simple, even taking off the wiper arms went well. Found 3 wasp nests inside up under the space by the windshield. I get several in the door hinge area every year. Cleaned out the usual dirt, debris, leaves and...

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

LAST UPDATE!! IT'S FINALLY DONE!! DO NOT LOOK IF YOU HATE DASH PAD DESTRUCTION WITH METAL CUTTERS!! Since my dash pad was very bad and horribly cracked and crumbling anyway, I decided to just cut it away and replace the speaker without removing the dash pad. This was not my first choice of...

Installed new lower radiator hose and heater hoses

Installed new correct molded lower radiator hose and both heater hoses. Wanted both heater hoses in red but the local NAPA said red is discontinued and superseded by black. They had 3/4" by 5 feet in red so I took that in addition to the 5/8" by 5 feet black. Not worth a trip to other stores...

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

Well, I took some damage to the right hand and arm, probably 25 pokes and scraps, but the AM radio is installed, and it works. Works but doesn't sound very good over half volume. Even tried adjusting the antenna trimmer pot above the tuning shaft. And a new antenna wire and windshield snap...

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

Everything ready to reinstall, just waiting on the antenna cable, should be delivered Friday. Just need to make the time! UPDATE: Spent 30 minutes installing the radio and bracket but found that plugging in the black and white connectors in back is a bit difficult for my fat hands. After 15...

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

Tried to install the AM radio today, the black and white wire connectors are present and correct, the center dash speaker is present and looks ok, but someone hacked off the antenna cable about one foot below the windshield connector. A nice clean cut, makes no sense to me. Now I have to buy a...

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

The beast AM radio lives! Unable to post the short video with sound so you will have to add your own audio in your head. Works fine and sounds ok. I did not have to do any electrical repairs, it worked as is, just clean and lube. We shall see after I reinstall it in the dash board. Weather is...

Looking to get another black and white connector with short pigtail wires. Want to use them for bench testing the radio outside of the truck. My '81 does have the stock black and white connector behind the dash.

Looking to fill this hole in the dashboard ===DONE!!

AM radio arrived today; inspection has begun. No obvious signs of electrical damage, no burned components, no cracked solder joints. Neutralized some mild corrosion of bottom of the circuit board, almost looks like water dripped in. Painted top and bottom covers. Illumination light bulb works...

Routing of blower switch wiring to firewall grommet?

The 3 wires going from the blower speed switch to the firewall grommet are visible in my '81 C10. They droop down under the heater box. It appears to me that they should be routed up and over the heater box. Am I correct in this thinking?
