    Steering gearbox spacers location

I guess I'll need longer bolts then.... No cracks on my frame, but I welded the side brace on anyway. Will start sanding and painting the spacers this weekend. The irony is, that when I watch videos of replacing steering gearboxes, I never see the spacers on disassembly. Weird.

I was wondering about those spacers myself. Would I even need them with new Grade-8 bolts?

What is this piece SUPPOSED to look like? (87 V10 Suburban)

Thank you. That looks much simpler that I was afraid it was going to be.

I want to drive an '89 suburban 700 miles home, what should I know?

Another thought.... You could probably have the vehicle delivered for close to your $500. It may take an extra week or two for logistics to work out. (You'll reduce costs by waiting for an existing shipment that your vehicle can be added to). It won't provide the sight seeing, but gives you...

What is this piece SUPPOSED to look like? (87 V10 Suburban)

This is a picture from the driver's side rear tire, facing forward to the inside body panel directly in front of that tire. There is a section that is completely gone (on both sides of the truck). It's also where a compound curve exists. The metal needs to curve out (towards the tire) to meet...

I bought a 1984 and don’t know what to do???

What known issues need to be resolved? What items would you like to do for fun or for learning with your son? What kind of budget did you have in mind for the truck to work on with your 17 year old son? Monthly? Annual? Total? Knowing the end goal, and expected resources could help with...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice and feedback. I believe that with this experience, I'll be able to do the rear differential much faster without the back and forth. My hope is that with all the back and forth, along with measurements and images this will be able to help others. I've...

8.5" front axle ball joints installation

I think you are referring to this line from the instructions: It's important to note that this is followed by Torque the Lower Ball Joint, and then..... [ https://www.moogparts.com/pdf/installation-documents/balljoints/AXCF4319().pdf ] Per Moog, You would install the adjusting sleeve...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Index - 009 Pinion Shim: .038 Carrier-Left Shim: .213 Carrier-Right Shim: .229 Backlash: .010 Pattern: I removed .004 from the total shims to address the issue in index 008. This time it felt better, and I had .010 of backlash. Feedback on pattern?

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Index - 008 Pinion Shim: .038 Carrier-Left Shim: .223 Carrier-Right Shim: .223 Backlash: Not measurable Pattern: The carrier was so tight that I could barely turn it, and it took multiple people to pry it back out again. This may have part of the backlash issue, but I couldn't feel any.

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Thanks for the reply. That confirms what I'm setting up now. I've shimmed the pinion to .038 (the earlier "good" pic was at .035), and am setting up .223 on both left and right to counter the backlash.

@Turbo4whl Unfortunately, with that pattern, I only had .002 of backlash.

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Sorry for being slow, but I'm unsure of next steps. I would want to reduce pinion shim to increase backlash, but I'm already at the top of the gear teeth. If I reduced pinion shim, would I be able to correct for that by adding shim to the carrier-left, and reducing from the carrier-right?

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Moving the pinion out, my backlash was perfect, but the pattern returned to where I started. I attempted to add some shim to the left, but I went too much and couldn't fit them in. At this point, I thought I should probably take a step back, and get the pinion pre-load figured out (using...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Thanks again, I came in from measuring the latest setup, and found your responses. Unfortunately, I adjusted the pinion in to move the pattern deeper into the gear and thought I could then adjust the carrier shims to add back backlash (images attached). It sounds like that was the opposite...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

It seems that everything I do results in conflicting information. I just painted the ring after that last measurement, and it tells me that the pinion needs to be closer to the ring gear. I would think that would decrease my backlash, which is already below spec. I'll add shim to the pinion...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Seems like I was on the right track.... Adding .015 to the right side, brought me from .002 to .006 backlash. It was a beast getting the left-side bearing in though. Lots of beating with a wide punch, while using a tire iron as a lever to keep the carrier as far to the right as it could be...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Here's where I'm at now... I added .016 of shim to the pinion, and then measured only .002 of backlash. Going from .020 to .002 with .016 of shim isn't adding up to me. I'm thinking there has to be another factor at play. This is my first differential rebuild, but I'm trying to be logical as...

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Good news... With no shims, I'm seeing .020 backlash. I'll add .015 to .017 tomorrow (gotta see what shims I have available) and hopefully see that drop the backlash to .0095 -- .008.

In case anyone is interested in a little satisfying entertainment while I work on reassembly.... Here's the video of the front axle being cleaned up when it was first pulled last year.

New pinion gear is thicker than original

Just to be safe, I'm going to throw measurements out the window, and assume something there is faulty. I have the clamshell separators, and a press to disassemble/re-assemble quickly. I also picked up the 3/4 Electric Impact at HF last night. Painfully expensive, but absolutely worth it. The...
