The pic is from under the truck looking up in the transmission area. This mystery connector splits off tv he main harness right about as t the firewall. It splits off the upper driver side transmission connection toward the front of the truck.

Any guesses.

We just put this truck back together after about 10 years in pieces. May be a lot of stupid questions on the way lol...

Truck series and transmission type? Best guess at wire colors.

That plug looks like it fits a sensor of some sort.
Look at the wiring diagram for the car.
Probably only fits in one connector..so it cant be installed incorrectly.
Could be the speed sensor on the transmission?

Since I can't find it I'm wondering if it goes to the top of the gas tank? This one has two.

That may be the over-drive control plug.

I've been looking through schematics. That could be....I'll check on it.

If it is, it should plug in almost directly above where it's hanging. I can't tell from the pic and it's hard to see. IIRC, it plugs in 'downward', not inward, so you may have to get an inspection mirror and check for debris inside the connector before you try to plug it in.

That's not it....looks like it though. There is already one plugged in on top the transmission. Where it splits from the harness (right about the fire wall) it could just as easily get plugged into the engine compartment. I'll look all over again later when I get home. I havent tried the washers yet...maybe washer pump?

Are you by any chance running a dual stage accelerator pump Quadrajet because that maybe for that, which I think is what Jim is referring to about the temperature. That looks like the air injection diverter connector, but it’s too far away to be that.

Any chance the grey wire might actually be brown that has faded? Do you or did you have an ESC system installed? If so, is there a tip-in vacuum switch mounted on the firewall?

It could be on the RH side - by the transmission dipstick:

Or on the LH side behind the master cylinder vacuum booster:
