serpentine help, what to do?

i have a 96-99 l31r. just a 4bolt truck motor from those years. i picked up everything from a donor motor today: accessory brackets, all accessories and pulleys (a/c, alt, water pump, power steering pump, idler, blah, blah), the intake system(manifold, vortec injection, etc), distributer, starter, exhaust manifold…think everything but the long block…but he forgot the fan and fan clutch, oh well.

i was only looking for the accessory brackets when on CL, but i got everything for $100. i figure i can sell the a/c compressor, intake/injection stuff, distributer and all the other crap for what i paid.

besides the brackets, i'll use the alternator and starter for now. as for the water pump, i can't bring myself to installing a used 20 year old one no matter the condition. so what do you guys recommend?

1. the water pump from a 94 pickup should work right? spins the right direction, doesn't have all the extra holes like a 96 does for coolant headed to the intake…

2. pulley from a 94? will that line up correctly with vortec serpentine accessories?

3. anyone make a solid, non clutched fan that has blade pitch to run the serpentine direction as apposed to the v-belt direct drive fan i have already from my carb sbc? if not, should i meet back up with the guy to get the fan setup from the 97 motor? i'd rather a direct drive clutch-less fan if possible. i have the larger diesel radiator/shroud if that matters. not sure if the fan is bigger than the same year 350s..

4. i'll be running a/c delete, and hence selling the compressor and lines unless its worth hanging on to to convert the truck in the future. not even sure about refrigerant types and availability of some of the older refrigerant types in California.

Just get a new water pump for the pulley set up. They can’t be that horrible and you have a core now. Delete the finger removing device and go electric fan. There’s a thread here on e fans. I think I read Windstar fans work nicely on these radiators.

There's a few good ones but Windstar is one of the top ones, I plan on putting one in the Burb and the C10 for sure..

I don’t think so... part number is 1136559

This is the stuff minus the exhaust manifold, a pulley, some brackets and all the bolts

Just did this swap on my TBI, use the ps pump from the vortec the one from your turck will not clear, I ground a hole in trying to make mine work. if youre not using the vortec intake you will need the hose from the intake to the water pump when using the vortec block, with the vortec block use the vortec wp and pullley fan. With TBI block use the 94 pump,pulley and fan.

if youre not using the vortec intake you will need the hose from the intake to the water pump when using the vortec block

can you clarify this?

I guess I have a Crown Vic fan in mine, but my radiator isn’t OEM.

i've gone through a fair amount of the old threads now. it helps when you click "search titles only". i searched before i asked but it was every post ever with the word electric in them. just got involved in forums, still learning.

i like the idea of it looking as stock as possible under the hood though its not necessary. the idea gmachinz used putting a trimmed t-bird fan that slips into the oem shroud looks promising. i'm going to measure my shroud in the morning.

The vortec block does not have the coolant return to the water pump like the 55-95 SBC does, so to resolve the issue gm put a port on the stock intake that had a hose routed to the water pump. When you swap to a carb intake if you dont install this hose it can cause over heating issues notes this in the instructions of the manifold if you bought it new. I just looks like the hose going from intake to wp on the big blocks. Like this.

no, I used that for brake booster and HVAC vacuum line. EGR does not go on this intake. Mine went into the trash.

Plumbing my cooling system this afternoon. I have some questions.

Originally my 5/8” heater hose went to the passenger front of intake manifold. The 3/4” went to the radiator just below the filler.

My water pump and engine are from the vortec era. The water pump has two non threaded hose nipples. The 3/4” nipple on the radiator is also not threaded.

Any ideas on routing the hoses, while maintaining proper external bypass AND using all of the non threaded nipples to avoid leaks?

So I’m not mixed up, I’ll call the two manifold ports front port and passenger port. In the water pump, I’ll call them passenger nipple and driver nipple.

The passenger nipple would cleanly route to front port on intake for bypass, then passenger port on intake into heater core, then from heater core to radiator. That leaves the lower passenger nipple on the water pump open though...

I could leave the plug in the passenger side of intake manifold and run the open passenger nipple from the water pump to the heater inlet. I’m not sure of the direction of flow from the water pump on the two nipples. Is the coolant flow outbound from both?

Thoughts?
