The white wire is the ground. This grounds the orange power through the bulbs. All you want to do is touch it to a good clean metal body surface. See if the bulbs light. Otherwise, there's a break in that white wire.

Also. Close the doors when testing. Or only keep the one open that you pulled the switch out of. Otherwise you're turning the lights on by having the door open defeating the testing purpose... if I explain myself well. Lol

Touch the white wire to the body this simulate opening the door and closing the striker switch. When the door is closed the switch is open and the light is off.

I touched the white wire to the body and tried other places I could ground it and nothing happened

Check continuity from the end of the white wire to the light. If it's open check between the end and the plug until you are good and you will find the break in the circuit.

I found that this orange wire is dead which goes behind the fuse box, could this be the break? Should I take the fuse box out and check?

Winner winner chicken dinner. I would remove as much of that and replace with new. Moisture will travel threw wiring like a super highway. And after it's fixed don't put it back where you pulled it from.run it across the foot well and under the seat to the back corner.
