So there is your problem. Jerry rigged throttle cable. That black plastic piece goes in front of the silver fishing weight looking part so you're losing a lot of throttle right there.

I just went through this. I had to adjust the switch. Very easy. Just push on the square end of the sliding part of the switch until it bottoms out. Then go drive your truck. The first time you put the pedal to the floor it will set it. From then on your downshifts should be better. Worked for me.
BTW this was on a 1985 Burb with a TH400.

Looking at it again, that doesn't look like the correct linkage rod to strike a kickdown switch.

If push the switch forward it just springs back. I could not find a decent to lock it forward so it would ratchet back either as mentioned in the link from 74 short bed. Hot rod is it the pedal assembly portion that doesn't look correct or the white tube piece. Once again I appreciate everyone's help

Just went out and took some pics of mine just for comparison. Pedal in idle position. I adjusted this switch about a month ago and works great. Solved my no downshift problem. If you can't adjust yours you may have a defective switch.

Finally got some time today and took the damn switch out and took it apart to see what the issue is. Needless to say I need a new switch. Small parts inside that had deteriorated we're keeping the slide to function as it should. Well at least I know what's wrong and how to fix. Either a junkyard find or it's just getting a toggle on it. Thanks to all who helped me beat my head against the wall for this small issue that was driving me nuts
