Mine is bent like many I have read on here. Anyone out there have an extra one with skid plate they would be willing to sell? Mine is the double hub type. I included a picture of one like I am looking for.

HRPC just went through a mess with his crossmembers, had several. Not sure how much it would cost to ship something like that, having no luck finding the "W" style locally?

Yes having a hard time finding that style local. All the salvage yards don't carry anything older than 95. I know shipping would be high but gotta find one.

I bet you could fabricate one for 1/2 the price, and build it twice as beefy as the oem cross member.

What did you ever do about this??? You know if you just get any W member, it will be punched to bolt the OEM skid plate onto. I'd take any W member I could get my hands on. I robbed the one off my 85 K10 to put on my 85 K1500, so I am 1 short right now unless I go with the Burb later model NP241C crossmember.

Pops just made his own for his 85 K30.

For purpose or reference, here are some pics of a W crossmember off of an 85 truck with NP208 and 700r4, and pic of a crossmember off of a 91 Burb with a 700r4 and NP241C.

Notice both of these are hole punched to bolt on the optional skid plate

Hey HotRod thanks for the advice. If cant find the original (which is looking that way) I will just go that route you are talking about from the 91. I have seen those around but wasn't sure if the different crossmembers were for specific transfer case. If that will work on mine I will just do that.

I too suffer from a bent crossmember :(

From looking at the pic above it appears that the W style is a tad bit longer than the later model? So not a direct fit?

Or maybe it's just the picture looking that way?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard AJI. Really, do you have a 5.3 in your 85 K10?? We need some pics of that.

Good catch on the length. I'm not sure. I'd like to say its the pic cuz I sure thought they were identical in length. Only thing in using the later one, is the holes are spread further apart so you'd have to either drill new holed in the crossmember, or the frame. Obviously the later one is less likley to get hit too. So it must be a common problem to bottom out and bend these low hanging members. Seems there are several bent ones out there.

Yep. Really do have a 5.3 in the ol truck. Just got it together and running. I'm at work now, but I'll snap a pic of it when I get home. Set it up for a carb so I didn't have to get new tanks and do quite as much wiring.

Mine is bent on the driver side, and it appears that the newer one hangs just as low..is that so?

And do you think there's enough material in the newer one to drill new mounting holes without significantly weakening it?

I'd see no problems in drilling holes in the new one. The 2 holes should be between the 2 OEM holes in that one. I'd use the old crossmember for a template since the holes are starggered in the OEM crossmember.

Thanks a lot for your help. Wanna sell the one you have? :Big Laugh:

And who built this one? And how can I get in contact with them?

Finding out, when you find a crossmember you better hold onto it. IF I didn't need it, I'd let it go, but I also have a 85K10 that I robbed the current W member out of for the 85K1500. So I better hold onto it incase I don't come across another W member.

Oneluckypops in Missery aka Missouri built that one.
