It's a lsd or posi yes. Open until one side starts to slip then the other side starts to engage. I snapped shafts all the damn time. I was about to upgrade to a 60 when I flipped it. It had a bad ass 454 too and I never was shy of wide open and we don't have mud. All Rocky mountains lol. Not as forgiving as mud.
With clutches or mechanical locking components, I should of elaborated.

Early 3/4 tons received a full floater in the rear. And front 44 might have desirable flat top knuckles for cross over steering upgrade

I think only the early years around 75 and earlier had difference 1/2 vs 3/4 on the spindle size and the bearing. Later was just being 8 lugs and larger brakes.

If they have external lock out hubs the inner bearing is bigger. The lock outs have 6 bolts mounting them to the hub. The bolts like to back out and break.

The later hub bearings are the same 1/2 to 3/4 ton d44 to 10 bolt.

this makes it a mf to find replacement bearings, I have a set of these spindles and am swapping them out for the smaller easier to find bearing.

Actually the spindles are the same and you can get bearings at rockauto or lmc. The inner race that rides on the spindle is the same diameter. I have a set of each kind of hub and have switched back and forth without issue. Swapping the spindle won't change anything. If you have a set of newer hubs you can put them right on.
