So, tried the 5/8's wrench route. That didn't work very well. Not willing to spend the $70 for the Melling one. So, gonna try to make one myself.

Figuring I'll take two plates of 1/4" steel and weld em together. Run a 1/2" bolt through em and stick it all together. Cut it in half, and run a couple bolts to clamp the sides together. Should be all good to go.

If anyone else has made their own tool, would love to see what you came up with.

Yup. Tried with a 5/8" wrench, but it fights it the whole way and refuses to seat.

put sump in freezer I usually do overnight, dig out your heat gun ( I dont like to use torches on the engine) heat the pump up with the heat gun. It doesnt have to glow red(probably bad for it anyway) but warm it up infrared temp gun is nice for checking temp but, you want it to be above ambient temp I try to get it warm as possible to expand the metal. The cold of the freezer contracts the sump making the tube smaller and easier to put in. Then apply the wrench and hammer method...and for the love of god tack well that mother ****** to the oil pump. Last 2 oil pans I have dropped had the sump laying in the pan.

I'll give that a whirl. Thanks. I also got one of those bolt on brackets to hold on the pickup tube. Will probably throw a quick tack or two on it as well so it'll be less likely to spin.

Already have the materials lying around for the tool, so may just make that in the spare time too.

without heating and cooling them I have only seen damage occur from beating them in. I have also taken part of a steel tube that fit over the sump tube notched on one side to allow to fit over the tube a used it for installing instead of the wrench.

I did mine a week or two ago. Put the pickup in the freezer for about an hour or two. Then used the wrench trick and it went in without too much trouble.
If absolute necessary you might be able to pop the pump itself into a oven set at very low for a minute or two not very long but just enough to get it lukewarm.

The pump goes in an engine that can safely run well over 200 degrees. It should be fine in the oven at 200*.
