Ok maybe I'll get an answer here I posted in my build but no answer hoping someone will be able to help.

I've got a 91 454 out of a parts truck. Was told it ran when the truck was parked 4 years ago. And was told only has 80k on it. Odometer reads 30k. Got it home and it was stuck wouldn't budge. Put atf down the intake and the cylinders and after sitting for a couple of weeks it will roll all the way over! Yay! So now my question is I don't want to rebuilt it if I can help it do you think the rings and cylinder walls are ok? Should I do a compression check it or what? Hate to get it in a truck just to find out it need rebuilt

I'd atleast pull the heads and visually inspect the cylinders. Then again if the rings were stuck they may not be in that good of shape literally.

Sorry man, like you said wouldn't want to get it in the truck and have it smoke like a freight train.

Know anybody with a boroscope? They are a handy gizmo for a situation like this. Just stick the end in the spark plug hole and see whats on the little TV screen.

Yes and no you can see the bore but you won't see if the rings are "glued" to the pistons and lost their sealing properties. Not arguing just saying.

That thought had crossed my mind I can rent one from AutoZone for like a hundred and forty did that to make sure my 4.8 was a 4.8 once.

@Honky Kong jr

I can't do a compression check to make sure the Rings are holding? that would save me from buying head bolts and gaskets if they are okay

Hell, you can pic them up off ebay that will plug into your smart phone and display the picture in high def color for $20. One of the guys I work with picked one up last year just to see if it was worth a damn. Pretty impressive for the money spent.

The oil rings being the smallest will stick the easiest. And a compression test isn't gonna tell you anything about them. If you do a compression test do a dry test and then a wet test.
