Trailering a K10 home?

I may have finally found a K10 to buy, but it's 90 minutes away and needs to be trailered. My question is this - what's the easiest way to do that? I've never trailered a car before. I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 5.3. I went through the UHaul website and the auto trailer wouldn't let me select it because it says my truck's towing limit isn't enough (5,000 pounds is what it says on my hitch). I didn't know if that was strictly adhered to, or if I could bypass that, or what you guys recommend.

Use my 2002 2500 HD CCLB with a 8.1, 4.10 gear, and 9200 GVRW, and say you're towing a Civic, whatever year. It's what I always put, and it works fine.

A regular cab longed will just barely fit the uhaul trailer, I use the local equipment rental place now because they have bigger trailers, and it's cheaper.

Agreed. Just make sure you remember the specs you said if you reserve it on the site and go pick it up because they'll want to verify it with you before you take off.

Instead of changing what you are towing with, alter what vehicle is going to be on the trailer. They check your tow vehicle. But, being a 1500 with 4l60e transmission stay in drive and you might have to keep your speed low(like 40mph low to reduce sway). You are probably failing their %80 rule(must equal or exceed 80% of the combined weight of the trailer (2,210 lbs.) and the vehicle being towed (up to 5,290 lbs.). The Uhual trailer will go in to a heavy sway at higher speeds when fully loaded weight is equal the tow vehicle weight. Check if your hitch is capable of 10k with weight distributed set up. Empty trailer is 2.2k lb and the k10 could be about 5k lb which would put it at 7.2k weight. Which in turn is just about the limit for your half ton truck(7-8k depending on options). If the trucks oem towing is up to 7-8k range, usually the hitch installed should handle up to 10k. If hitch is a lower class rating, I don't think I would chance the tow.

As for fitting on the trailer. I know for a fact a suburban just barely fits on the trailer, so a k10 should be ok.

I guess it depends on the store, but I've never done more than went inside, verified info, and went out and backed up to the trailer lol.

It has been a quick visual for me every time. They see 8 lugs wheels and call it good. But I borrow an 16 or 18ft trailer if I can instead as it is more stable.

When I towed my K30 home in December, I used U-Haul. As stated, the truck just fit. They did verify what I was using to tow with. I even lied and said I was hauling a K10, not a K30 (5400 LBS). I had to air down the front tires of the K30 to fit their staps over the tires. If the truck you're looking at has wide tires, it my not fit on their trailer. I also added some straps at the rear as I was going to be driving 3 hours and part of that was in the hills. My tow vehicle is a 2016 Ram 2500 crew cab. It's about 7500 unloaded, about the same as the U-haul and my K30. I did not have issues with sway, even going 65-70 MPH, but my truck is heavier than your's.

I've had old timer type stores inspect my towing vehicle, and I've rented from little Hindu stores, and they did not inspect. I guess it just depends on who it is.

Calling the local equipment dealer is a better bet though, I can rent an 18' double axle with brakes for forty five bucks for four hours, and they really don't time me.

Being a non optimal towing arrangement, be ready to encounter sway when at highway speeds using uhaul trailer. I had much better luck borrowing 18' or 20' trailer with brakes for towing, altrough it made for a heavier tow.

Also remember the straight axle trucks are wider up front then they are in the back. If it has "normal" tires on it you should be fine.
