I have an 84 k10 with a 305 and I was told I have the wrong distributor ( mine has no vacume advance) and that is part of the reason why it lacks major power going up any kind of hill and gets 8-9 mpg. I am planning on making a trip to the pull a part here when money allows. So I guess my question is what should I look for? Also mine says deco remy on top of the cap.

Sounds like it's the wrong one, my '84 305 has a vacuum advance.

Did you get roughly 8-9 mpg in town? With seriously no power?

Mines only a 2wd, but I average 15 mpg city and highway combined. It's gutless off the line, but it has 2.56 gears out back.

Besides lacking a vacuum advance, your timing might just be set back too far. That alone can cause poor power and mpg, if it runs well otherwise.

Well, 305's don't have much power to speak of anyway, BUT, you need a 74-86 HEI igntion dizzy. You can get a whole set up, with Cap, Rotor, Module, Dizzy and all for $49. See Skip White on Ebay.

This is the one I got, and I don't like this top, so I suggest going with the OE style coil cover and avoid that race coil look. It's a real PITA to take off a plug wire with is type.

I'd go with this style, and here it is in Black, and it's also available in Red, and I think Clear.

In Red

In Clear with the coil cover I don't care for, but it's $3 more.

In clear with the OE style coil cover for $49.50 shipped.

Does your truck have electronic spark control? Not shure what year it came out. I had an 85 that had it and it was junk, I just stabbed in a vaccume advance destributer and ran a ton better. ESP distributers had a four pin plug connector hanging out the bottom of them.

There is also a way to bypass the ESC. I forget which 2 of the 4 wires you can cut, twist them together, then it functions just like a normal non ESC dizzy.

Any of dizzies I posted above will also bypass the ESC. IIRC, 81 was the was first year for ESC.

Thank you guys for all the helpful information I counted three wires coming from the dizzy I may be wrong though I just took a quick look see in there. Now to order a new dizzy off of eBay the parts store here in town wants $120 for one and the junk yard wants $49 so I will just order it off line.

First thing to do is identify it. If it's a standard HEI and someone has taken off the Vac advance, it's prolly not worth the time to list. It might even be a racing dizzy and worth something. I know back in the race days, Mallory Unilite or Dual Point dizzies didn't have vac advance. For a race motor you pretty depend on full mechanical advance so vac advance isn't needed and the plate it solid.

So, first things first. Identify the dizzy.

I would love to get 9 mpg from my K10. 6-7mpg is all I get around here, but I also have a built 350.

Dizzy says delco remy on top, and it doesn't have a vacume, I think it's for a newer model truck, on the other hand I too wouldn't mind 8-9 mpg if and that's a BIG IF I had the power too go along with those perspective numbers
