Default 454 RV cam choices
hi guys
I have a class A RV I would like to tow our chevy k5 p/u on a trailer this summer to the mud runs . My problem is the 454 right now is week and will only do 50 mph on the hiway on the flat. I would like to get it up to 65mph
I was thinking of doing a cam change. its a 454 TBI I was also thinking od gutting the cat and adding a flow master .
any good ideas for a cam?

Edelbrock Performer cams are torquey, but you could also improve the highway tow power by going a size or two smaller than what you're running now on it, if you're any over stock tire size.

hmmm ??? I just wonder if those TBI heads would breathe good enough to justify a RV cam, and how about the injectors in the TBI needing to be a bit bigger. As usual, with a cam change, you'd have to consider other mods to benefit from it. What gear ratio and is the trans OD or non OD??? You'd want to go with a cam that is still going to be in the power band at whatever rpm you'd be at that speed. Not saying go with a top end cam at all. You still want all the low end grunt, but just saying make sure your cam is still pulling and in the torque band at 65 so it doesn't fall on its face at 50mph like its doing now.

Sounds like it's got no balls. Top speed of 50? How does it not overheat working that hard just to stay at highway speeds?

I'd start with a fuel pressure check.

My RV is all stock with 100k miles. I dont like to push it but it will do 85 mph with out the trailer. I feel it cruises @ 60 -65 mph getting 11 mpg .With the trailer it is struggling big time. Its a 28 foot p30 chassis 454 tbi with a OD trans looks like a 4l80 that has been rebuilt. GVW of14,800
I just want to go to the mud runs 4 hrs away@ 65mph and not to have to drive the ford pulling the truck and the camper 2 x the fuel and tolls .
I wonder what fleetwood spec. cam was

You might have a problem with the cat or cam/timing chain worn out.

Get a cam close to the stock unit, bigger
Those heads are fine and have known to make 450HP,
100K, I'd change the valve springs too. You can get a cam kit with everything. Talk to the dude at comp cams
wouldn't hurt to change that tranny filter too.
